🏍️ JACARANDA RALLY ‘R’ 2026 — 430KM. THREE STAGES. NO EASY FINISH.

A full day of sand, technical riding and relentless navigation around Pretoria — Rampage’s final One Day Challenge of 2026 lived up to its name.

The dust has settled on the Jacaranda Rally ‘R’, but the aches, bruises and stories will last a little longer.

Across 430km and three stages, this Rampage One Day Challenge delivered exactly what its name promised. De Wildt’s sand and technical riding, demanding navigation and flowing rally sections north of Pretoria made this much more than a long day on a bike.

With only six riders out of 14, recording a complete three-stage result, finishing was an achievement in itself.

🏆 RUBEN GETS IT RIGHT — WITHOUT A SINGLE PENALTY

In the roadbook category, Ruben Beetge (Beetge Rubs ) took overall honours with 4:37:43, ahead of Angelo Maranta in 4:47:30 and Cooper Menton in 5:50:56.

Ruben was also the only finisher without penalties. A clean run through a route like this says plenty: speed matters, but speed without accurate navigation and discipline does not guarantee a result.

That is the challenge of rally navigation. Read the roadbook, interpret the terrain, find the waypoints, manage the bike and respect the speed zones — while keeping moving through tough conditions.

Riaan Visser brought his KTM 890 home in fourth with 6:01:42, followed by Marnand Strydom in 6:07:18.

Recorded times exclude transition zones on tar and major public roads.

🧭 GPX: MATT MAY BRINGS IT HOME

Three riders took on the GPX category, with Matt May the only rider to record a full three-stage finish.

His result of 6:13:15 included 1:12:07 in speeding penalties — a painful addition after a demanding day. Well done to Matt for seeing it through.

Roadbook or GPX, the lesson remains the same: the result comes from the combination of riding, navigation and following the rules, not simply being fastest between two points.

💪 A CHALLENGE FOR RIDERS AND MACHINES

The field included KTM 890s, a CFMOTO 450 and a Yamaha T7, alongside the KTM 500s and 690s. This was a route that rewarded a manageable bike, riding fitness and the ability to keep navigating when tired.

For the newcomers learning to combine navigation with off-road riding, there was plenty to absorb. Respect to everyone who stepped into that challenge — whether they finished every stage or had to call it a day.

There were falls, one medical incident and one mechanical recovery. Mark came away with suspected rib injuries — wishing you a speedy recovery, buddy. Tony’s rear-wheel bearing failed completely in Dinokeng during Stage 3, but he and the bike were recovered that afternoon.

And amid all the serious riding, Team B**b brought some Halloween colour with their head decorations. You guys looked great! 😃

📖 MORE THAN FOLLOWING A ROUTE

True roadbook navigation, as used in Dakar and rally-raid events, demands several skills at once. It is not simply following the rider ahead or chasing a line on a screen.

Bringing that experience to the South African biking community is what Rampage is about: special-stage timing, waypoints, speed zones and navigation, combined into a demanding day of adventure riding.

The dusty smiles and stories afterwards said it best. Tough? Absolutely. Rewarding? Just as much.

A big shout-out to my recce riders Justin, Marnus Beetge and Fanie Smith for helping put this route together and test it out. Fanie also rode sweep on the day — thank you for looking after the back of the field!

And a huge thank you to my family, Alida Beetge and Carissa Beetge, who, as always, made dateballs to give the riders an energy boost out on the route. Those little treats have become a much-loved part of our events! ❤️

🏍️ FROM AN IDEA TO A REAL-WORLD RALLY — WITH JACARANDA RALLY 2 DAYS AWAY!

Marnus, my son, is out dry-running our 430km Jacaranda Rally route, testing my roadbooks for the event on Saturday, with a Rampager friend, Justin, supporting him while I monitor from HQ — home. 😁

At home HQ, on my screens: monitoring the roadbook he's riding and live-tracking him on the route using the exact roadbook! I can follow his progress, see where he gets lost, and watch him figure it out and get back on track. Incredible if you think about it! Tech I helped develop and that we use ourselves at Rampage.

This is the part that makes me incredibly proud: being involved in developing the technology and bringing everything together — the idea, route design, roadbook, navigation and tracking — then seeing it work out in the real world. This Saturday my other son Ruben, together with the other participants will ride the live route and event. Proud dad moment!

There's a lot of work between imagining an event like this and having a rider out there navigating it. Sitting here watching those pieces come together is hugely rewarding.

Proud of what I've helped build with Rampage. Having my son out there putting it to the test makes it even more special. 💪🏻

🏍️ RECCE DAY — RAMPAGE JACARANDA RALLY 'R'

We finished the route recce today, in 38 degree heat. Tough conditions, but the route delivered. The event is one week away. Amazing route!

Entries for this event are unfortunate closed.

We don't have Western Cape views, Lesotho's passes or KZN greenery, but damb we've got off-road routes galore.

It's a beaut — long endurance, non-stop navigation and bike movement, plenty of sand, bush, single track, cattle tracks and dirt roads. A few unavoidable tar liaison sections, but they're rewarded with amazing riding.

The rally takes riders around the whole of Pretoria and the northern surrounds, +400km. Clockwise, starting and ending in Pretoria East, with some liaison at the start, going around Hartbeespoort, canals, Jericho, De Wildt (renowned for its sand and trails), then north through the bush of Mabopane, Shoshanguve, Hammanskraal, and finally back mainly on dirt roads to the start in Bashewa.

It's incredible to think you can ride around our capital with less than 15% tar over approximately 450km.

An incredibly rewarding route, but you'll feel it on the day, and the days after.

ODC 16 is a tough, Dakar-inspired endurance rally navigation route around Pretoria. Starting and finishing in Pretoria East, the Jacaranda Rally ‘R’ takes riders clockwise around Pretoria — including through the De Wildt area — which is exactly why it carries the Jacaranda name.

Expect approximately 10–20% tar, with the balance made up of off-road tracks, single track, open dirt and plenty of sand. This is a proper navigation challenge that demands endurance, focus and commitment.

This is the final ODC event of 2026.

Renosterkop Rally ‘R’ — Event Report 🏁

The Renosterkop Rally ‘R’ delivered a demanding day of 400+kms adventure riding, endurance and Dakar-inspired navigation across the Gauteng and Limpopo bushveld.

Although it was one of our smallest fields in recent years, the quality of riding and navigation was excellent. Most importantly, the event was completed without any medical incidents or mechanical recoveries.

Riders competed in two separate navigation classes: digital Roadbook and GPX track navigation.

In the GPX class, Marius delivered a fast, clean and accurate run. Wynand completed his first Rampage One Day Challenge and put in a strong performance. We hope to see him taking on the digital roadbook class at a future event.

The digital roadbook class produced a close contest:

Mark and Cooper delivered a disciplined team ride, collecting their waypoints and avoiding penalties. Ruben finished close behind despite a missed waypoint, speed penalties and losing approximately 15 minutes after going off track during Stage 3. His recovery was excellent.

Angelo started later than the field but rode strongly to make up time. Morag worked through navigation challenges during Stage 1 and successfully recovered to reach Moloto before returning to the finish. Marnard’s day ended early after a fuel-related mechanical problem.

Rampage results are based on more than speed. Navigation accuracy, waypoint collection, speed-zone compliance and penalties all contribute to each rider’s final position. Stage scores from each One Day Challenge also count towards the annual Rampage Championship.

The Renosterkop Rally ‘R’ once again proved what a Rampage event is about: long-distance adventure riding, accurate navigation, endurance and the satisfaction of completing a proper rally-style challenge.

🏁 GAUTENG STAMPEDE 'R' — ODC 14 - DONE AND DUSTED🏁

What a day.

The event started somewhat dramatic with myself being in a head-on accident on the way to the start. There was some confusion after a cancellation message was posted, but the message from the riders was clear — they wanted to ride.

Joey and Alexandre took over the start and briefing, and the guys set off. As always, the ODC veterans showed how rally works, and Mark stepped in to provide route support and quickly got onto it.

The day went splendid — no real mechanical issues and no medical incidents.

18 riders took on the route:

🧭 14 navigating Digital Roadbook

Unfortunately we had 5 cancellations due to medical (mostly flu), and 2 riders who turned back after the cancellation post and missed out. We will make arrangements for them to still ride the route.

The route ran from Mnandi in an anti-clockwise loop around Breedtsnek — mostly off-road, technical, and non-stop riding and navigation for a solid 6–8 hours.

I joined the group at the finish after a trip to the hospital post the car crash, and watched riders come in after a proper day out — riding hard sections and navigating like champions.

Special mention to Angelo and Ruben — both helped at the accident scene early morning, joined the route nearly 2 hours late, and still rode onto the podium for their accuracy.

Reminder:
These are not races.
Speed is not rewarded — consistency, navigation, and accuracy is key.
You can ride within the speed limit and still be ahead.
