The South African Open Chess Championship 2026 is proud to welcome Woman FIDE Master Nina Gardiner to Cape Town.

Nina is a titled South African player who has represented the country in numerous national and international events throughout her chess career. Holding the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title, she remains an active competitor and a familiar face on the South African chess circuit.

As she takes her seat at the board once again, Nina will be looking to make her mark in one of South Africa's premier chess events.

What challenges and opportunities await in this year's championship field?

The South African Open Chess Championship 2026 is proud to welcome FIDE Master Matfey Rogov to Cape Town.

Matfey enters the championship following a strong run of results in the Western Cape, including victory at the Cape of Good Hope Open Championship Section in 2025. He will be looking to test himself against some of the strongest players from across South Africa and beyond.

The South African Open Chess Championship 2026 is proud to welcome FM Calvin Klaasen .

Calvin is a FIDE Master and 2017 South African Closed Chess Champion (co-champion). He has also represented South Africa at the 2016 and 2018 Chess Olympiads, establishing himself as one of the country's most experienced competitors.
