COMPANY PROFILE
The word, Jing-A
n, literally translates as “Source of Serenity”, which was exactly what Dr Michael Lan envisioned to offer South Africans when he started his business. Jing-An The Asian Wellness Sanctuary was established almost 30 years ago, and continues to offer natural holistic healing solutions, based on the ancient authentic Chinese healing practices he was trained in. Dr Lan saw the need for Western Cultures to embrace a NEW level of awareness within themselves by discovering their Chi (inner strength) and wanted to encourage people to incorporate the ancient art of Chinese Medicine Healing into their lives and to find a balance between Eastern and Western philosophies. HISTORY
Dr Michael Lan is an accomplished traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner by trade and an accomplished Martial Artist highly respected by his peers. Dr Lan has had many years of training in different areas of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Martial Arts, including Acupuncture, Tui-Na Massage & Bonesetting, Moxibustion, Cupping, Chinese Herbs, Tae Kwon Do, Kenpo, Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Wu Shu, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Hsing-I and Pa Kua. He started out studying TCM, which he combined with training in the soft Martial Arts branches over a period of 8 years in South Africa, with further training in London and Beijing. His South African studies also included extensive practical community work in the townships and extensive teaching at the University of Cape Town. Interestingly, Dr Lan actually started out in the hard martial art forms before he commenced his studies. He realized that he was not finding enough peace and balance in the hard systems of his Martial Art training, which is when he decided to specialize in the soft, internal forms such as Tai Chi. He learned Tai Chi, Hsing-I and Pa Kua from a well-known Taiwanese Master, Dr Lin, who in turn learned from the legendary late Professor Cheng Man Ching from China. Prof Cheng was also responsible for introducing Tai Chi in the West in New York during the 60’s and 70’s. Alongside his TCM practice, Dr Lan then went on to spend another 6 years learning the art of Tai Chi, before he started teaching professionally. He started introducing and later popularised Tai Chi as an internal Martial Art system to South Africans, which was round about 1996, and has since given many lectures and workshops on how Tai Chi can help address and alleviate various stress-induced ailments in the body and assist in balancing one’s life. Many South African Health and Wellness magazines and TV programmes has since interviewed Dr Lan for his vast knowledge and expertise. He is also the official representative in South Africa for The World Tai Chi & Qi Gong Federation, and organizes the annual Tai Chi & Qi Gong Day in Cape Town. Unlike Bruce Lee who started with Tai Chi and then went on to train in hard Martial Arts like Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do, Dr Lan chose Tai Chi as a more complete system, after many years of practicing hard Martial Art forms. He owns a busy TCM Practice and Tai Chi studio in Gardens, Cape Town and gives daily evening classes and Saturday morning classes for both ‘Beginners’ and ‘Advanced’ students. He also offers private classes, training and teachers courses, and provides corporate teambuilding days and workshops. Dr Lan has over the years worked closely with world-renowned Masters from China,Taiwan, Malaysia and the US. Jing-An is also affiliated with the Western Province Chinese School, the Taiwanese Cultural Foundation and the Taiwanese Embassy in South Africa, and has recently also started offering children’s programmes at various private schools in Cape Town. Dr Lan furthermore works closely with a number of Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Medical Doctors and Specialists, who regularly refer patients to him. Over the years, realizing its tremendous healing potential, Dr Lan has focused strongly on making his art more accessible to more people, and has indeed taken the art of TCM and Tai Chi to a whole new level in South Africa. Dr Lan continues to develop his passion and art, and is committed to improving the lives of his patients and clients on a daily basis. BUSINESS MODEL
