Quite some time ago about my WHY. Why do I give my time for the crew. Why do I clear trails, cut down alien trees, build new running trails?
I've not been able to answer her. Today, scrolling through my photos, I've realized a few things.
Firstly, it's about community. Running is a sport that brings people together. Fast and slow, everyone is welcome (well, at least in our crew, ).
Secondly, I get to go to places that others might never get to see, and through I can take them there. The Blouklip Trail Run is coming up in a month's time and we need to clear trails (again), so that others can enjoy the beautiful scenery. But with a team behind me, I know we can do it. The Milky Way Marathon is another unique experience that I'm really proud of, where people get to run on incredible trails and experience clear skies and bright stars.
Thirdly, and probably the most important one, it's about mental health. The mountain brings a kind of healing that's hard to explain. There is something that happens inside you when you spend time in the mountains. And it is so rewarding to see others cross a finish line, finish an hour long run or tag a peak for the first time...a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and peace.

Sorry Danica, I don't have a one-liner to describe the why. I guess it's because there’s something incredibly rewarding about helping people discover how far they can go, both on the trail and within themselves.
