Is the TMO Ruining Rugby?

Tim from asks when was the last time you celebrated a try without hesitating? 🤔

We've seen it creep into the Premier League with VAR — fans standing still, waiting for confirmation before they dare to celebrate. The second celebration is never as euphoric as the first.

Rugby's heading down the same road. "Can I celebrate? Let me just wait…"

Here's the truth: officials are human. Players make mistakes. Coaches get things wrong. Some calls go for you, some against you. But when you demand absolute perfection from every decision, you kill the emotion of a live sport.

Dave Rennie's 53-Player Gamble

53 players. That's how many Dave Rennie has used this year — the same number Rassie Erasmus has thrown at the Springboks' campaign. 💥

The lessons from losing three in a row to South Africa were harsh, but Rennie flagged it before the tour: "We're going to get intel that is invaluable. We're going to know so much more about ourselves."

Now he sits back with game tape on 53 players, plotting his 2027 World Cup campaign. No better education than 44 at home plus 6 more on tour to South Africa.

But with the Nations Championship running straight through to the World Cup with no break, attrition is the real worry.

When World Rugby steps back and lets coaches and players get on with it, something special happens. One team develops a tactic, the next adjusts, and an arms race begins.

Case in point: France turned their aerial game weakness into a strength. New Zealand saw it, recognised the opportunity, and made it a superpower of their own.

That's what makes international rugby incredible. When you just leave it alone, the game evolves on its own.

Tim from reckons the TMO Should Be a Glorified Button Pusher

Carley, Brace, and Pearce. Three English refs who let the game flow — and no one complained. 👏

Kiwi refs are the same. What we don't want is what we saw from Marius in Sydney: going back to review something that clearly isn't foul play and spending five minutes standing around while the crowd goes cold.

And then the technology goes down and a guy runs on with a cell phone. Comedy. 🤦

Remove that from the game and rugby's in a hell of a good place. If Tim had his way, the TMO would be a glorified button pusher — just press play when the referee asks.

Simple as that. ✅
