🥋 SHODAN PRE-GRADING PREPARATION | JUNSHIBU DOJO

Today our Shodan candidates continued their intensive preparation at the Junshibu Dojo.

The road to Shodan is not about simply learning more techniques or wearing a black belt. It is about proving through consistent training, discipline, perseverance, humility and character that one is ready to accept the responsibility that comes with the rank.

As practitioners of OkinawanRyukyu Kobudo, we have a responsibility to respect, preserve and carry forward the traditions passed down through our Okinawan martial arts lineage.

Shodan is not the end of the journey — it is the beginning of a deeper understanding of Budo.

Train with purpose.
Train with humility.
Respect the tradition..
Earn your rank through your actions.

🥋 Congratulations to all our medal winners and every competitor who participated in our Karate & Kobudo Tournament! Every athlete displayed courage, discipline, determination, and outstanding sportsmanship.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated referees, judges, table officials, team managers, and coaches for your professionalism and hard work. Your commitment ensured a well-organised and successful event.

It was wonderful to welcome 11 karate schools from Tulbagh, Ceres, Franschhoek, and the Northern and Southern Suburbs, representing the Goju-Ryu, Shotokan, and Sh*to-Ryu styles. Together, we celebrated the true spirit of martial arts through friendship, respect, and healthy competition.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this tournament a memorable success. We look forward to seeing you all again next year! 🥋

OKINAWAN DOJO ETIQUETTE

* You can do what you want in your style, organization or dojo. This is information for Okinawan Karate styles who follow tradition & ETIQUETTE

Over the past 25 years, the use of the word "Oss or Osu" has become common in many Karate Dojos. However, most people only understand this as some type of "Japanese Greeting", NOT understanding its historical reference in Okinawa.

The term "Oss" in Okinawa, is considered a militaristic term that was used in Japan. In Okinawa, this term may be considered derogatory and insulting (even if they do not acknowledged as so, out of politeness).

If you are training in Okinawan Karate-Do, using this term in Okinawa, to an Okinawan or in an Okinawan Karate dojo, should be avoided, as it's not appropriate.

An alternative expression you can used is "Hai" which basically is an affirmation of yes, a greeting, or understanding or acknowledgement and much more polite in the Okinawan setting. You can also use the Okinawan (Uchina Guchi) language "Hai sai"
