On behalf of the Community Education Campaign team at The Agency for Refugee Education, Skills Training and Advocacy (ARESTA), we would like to extend to our facebook readers an invitation to join us for a peaceful march this Saturday April 6, 2013 beginning at 8:00.
The purpose of this march is to promote cultural diversity, acceptance, and peace within the communities of the Greater Philippi. It seeks to do this by drawing attention to the issues of crime, racism, discrimination and xenophobia.
This April 6th initiative, as part of a larger ongoing project in Philippi known as ‘Ubuntu Has No Borders’, is supported by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) who support the South African Government in strengthening communities of diversity & peace and nation building.
The ‘Ubuntu Has No Borders’ project has trained thus far, an impressive 160 peace monitors from communities across Cape Town townships, as well as 180 peace ambassadors and 60 peace club members from 16 schools in the area. The reason for this training is ultimately to foster a greater understanding of diversity and to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to mitigate tenuous situations in their communities and/or schools.
The march will begin at the councilor’s hall on Ngqwangi Street at Ward 35 with the intention to drop the memorandum at the Phillipi East Police station. Then from the Police station, we will go up to Acacia Park, then onto Vuyiseka (Sheffield) straight to the Lutheran church and then to the cycle, then Intsebenziswano Secondary School, ending at Bongolethu Primary School. We expect the march to take no more than 2 hours.
Once at the primary school, participants will then join in a Cultural Diversity Awareness event gathering whereby different cultural groups, South Africans and foreign nationals will all come together to showcase various dances and songs.
This is surely an important and worthwhile initiative, and so we encourage you to come out and show your support.
