Silent Steps

Silent Steps Silent Steps was initiated eleven years ago to raise funds for the National Institute for the Deaf.

What started as a solo, unsupported 27 day, 570km hike along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, evolved into a fully fletched hiking business over the past ten years. The initial fundraising activity was a 570km unsupported walk up the Skeleton Coast of Namibia undertaken by Anette Grobler. After the walk Ms Grobler received several requests from people wanting to undertake similar ‘off the beaten tr

ack’ adventures. While Silent Steps activities are no longer for the aid of the National Institute for the Deaf, this page has been revived to facilitate these ‘off the beaten track’ hikes and adventures.

There’s a waterfall in the Bainskloof with your name on it. 🌿

And right now, in October, the mountains are doing something spectacular — spring fynbos, crystal-clear pools, crisp mountain air and views that make everything that happened last week feel very, very small.

We’re being honest with you: the Boland Weekender has no bookings yet.

Which means if you book now, this is your weekend. Small group. Personal. Marika’s full attention on you from the first step to the last.

10 km through one of the Western Cape’s most beautiful mountain passes. A steady climb through the Bainskloof. Natural pools along the way. And a waterfall at the end that earns every metre of the ascent.
Marika is young — but don’t let that mislead you. She is professionally trained, deeply experienced, and she knows these mountains the way most people know their own neighbourhood. You are in the best possible hands.

This is not an extreme hike. It’s a 6.5 out of 10 — challenging enough to feel like an achievement, beautiful enough to feel like a reward.

📌Final Swartberg pass update to confirm the decision we made to postpone was the right one. The Swartberg pass remains closed.

Media Release by Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers. 9 June 2026.
Update on rockfall repairs and road closures along the R328 near Oudtshoorn

The Western Cape Government continues to prioritise the safety of road users and the restoration of access along the R328 (Cango Caves Road) following the major rockfall that occurred on 6 May 2026.

Following extensive stabilisation efforts, specialist teams were nearing completion of preliminary safety works when another severe storm system impacted the region between 3 and 5 June 2026. In anticipation of the Level 8 weather warning, teams implemented emergency measures to protect the site and minimise further damage.

Unfortunately, the intensity of the storm resulted in additional erosion and damage to some of the preliminary stabilisation works. This setback highlights the ongoing challenges posed by the series of extreme weather events experienced across the Western Cape since early May.

Following post-storm inspections, specialist geotechnical teams returned to site on Monday, 8 June 2026, to resume slope stabilisation works. These critical safety interventions remain necessary before rockfall debris can be removed and before the route can safely be reopened to the public.

At this stage, it would be premature to commit to a reopening date. The Department will continue to assess progress on site and provide regular updates as work advances.

The recent storms have also affected alternative routes in the area. Sections of Main Road 363 via Buffelskoof and Main Road 369 via the Swartberg Pass experienced flood-related damage, including washaways and high river flows. Emergency repair teams are currently undertaking make-safe operations to restore access on these routes as quickly as possible.

I wish to thank residents, businesses, tourists and road users for their continued patience and understanding. Our teams remain committed to restoring safe and reliable access while ensuring that the safety of workers and the travelling public remains our foremost priority.

You’ve ticked a lot of boxes.

The career. The family. The life that looks exactly like it was supposed to.
But there’s one thing still on the list.

One trip you’ve been quietly carrying for years.

The Camino de Santiago. 🐚
Silent Steps is walking it in June 2027 — and we have limited spots available for people who are ready to stop waiting.

15 days. Fully supported. Spain.
📅 6 – 21 June 2027
✔ Luggage forwarded to your accommodation every day
✔ Tour leader walks the full route with you
✔ Walk at your own pace — this is your pilgrimage, not ours
✔ Forest paths, ancient villages, stone roads and elevation that earns its views
✔ No experience needed — but stamina required and rewarded

This is not a race. It is not a retreat. It is 15 days of putting one foot in front of the other on one of the world’s most storied routes — and arriving at Santiago de Compostela changed.

Dear Swartberg Pass Hikers,

It is with great regret that we have to inform you that the Conquer the Swartberg Pass Hike, scheduled for 13 June, has been postponed to Saturday, 24 October.

There are a number of reasons for this difficult decision.

The tar roads from George and Oudtshoorn leading to the Swartberg Pass are currently closed and are expected to remain closed for several months. Since yesterday, the three gravel roads providing access to the pass have also been closed.

On the Prince Albert side of the pass, the Gamka Bridge over the Gamka River is under water. The extent of the structural damage to this bridge, as well as to the other bridges closer to Leeu-Gamka, can only be assessed once the water levels have subsided and the bridges become accessible. In addition, more rain is forecast for the coming weekend.

Even if some of the access roads are reopened in the near future, they will most likely only be suitable for 4x4 vehicles. Not all of our guests have access to 4x4 vehicles, and the buses we have booked to transfer hikers back to Prince Albert are certainly not equipped for such conditions.

Many of you will have witnessed our efforts over the past few weeks to avoid a postponement and to prevent hikers from losing money on flights, accommodation, and vehicle rentals. Unfortunately, these are truly unforeseen circumstances that nobody could have predicted or controlled.

The safety of our hikers, support crew, and service providers must remain our highest priority, and under the current circumstances we simply cannot guarantee safe access to the event.

We sincerely apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience this postponement may cause. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support. We look forward to welcoming you to the Conquer the Swartberg Pass Hike on 24 October and sharing a memorable experience together under far better conditions. 📍16 Mile Beach Hike
Yzerfontein, West Coast

It’s Friday afternoon.
The week has been long. The to-do list is still there. And somewhere between the school run and the fourth meeting of the day, you forgot to breathe.

Watch this. 👇

That’s Marika — one of our guides — walking the 16 Mile Beach Hike from Yzerfontein. 26 km of the most beautiful uninterrupted coastline in South Africa. Just beach, ocean, and open sky as far as you can see.

No hills. No technical terrain. Just a long, beautiful walk with good people along the water’s edge.

You don’t need to be fit. You don’t need experience. You just need one day and the decision to show up.

The next hike is coming. Spots are limited.

We hiked 66 km together, shared a few Jägermeisters, made memories, exchanged stories, spoke about our backgrounds and hardships, and even shed a few tears along the way. Six days was far too short. What a privilege it has been to spend this time with such a diverse group of hikers. We arrived as strangers, but leave with friendships and memories that will remain with us long after the Namib sand has been washed from our boots. Thank you all for making this journey so special. 🥾❤️🍻. Our next one is in November this year. Please send us a mail at [email protected] if you want to join.
