🚣 Our next Story Waves is one for the history books — literally.

Alfred Rowing Club and Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club invite you to join us on Friday 31 July from 6:30pm for a fascinating illustrated talk by Barrie Gasson on the golden years of rowing on Table Bay.

Before the construction of the Duncan Dock and the destruction of the Pier ended it all, Table Bay was home to a thriving rowing scene. Barrie will take us through rowing’s revival after 20 moribund years from 1914 to 1934, how the sport spread to UCT, Rondebosch Boys High, and Bishops, and how the finest Pier in the world played its part — before the bay’s boat rowing era ended forever.

Barrie Gasson is a retired Senior Lecturer in City & Regional Planning at UCT and co-author of Deeds not Words (2014), a history of Alfred Rowing Club. He is currently writing a history of university and schools’ rowing in Cape Town up to 1975.

🌊 Story Waves is back — and this one is unmissable.

On Friday 26 June at 18:30, we welcome Sibusiso Sizatu to share one of the most remarkable sailing stories we have ever heard.

Sibu grew up as a herd boy in the rural village of Qumbu in the Eastern Cape. If you had told that nine-year-old boy that he would one day captain a winning crew in an international yacht race, he would never have believed it.

But that is exactly what happened.

In January 2026, Sibu and his crew — two guys and three girls — crossed the finish line of the prestigious Cape2Rio yacht race aboard the Alexforbes Angel Wings, beating the world. And that is just the beginning of the story. The drama of the boat being sunk on the way home? You are going to want to hear that part in person.

We are excited to share some positive news in the ongoing effort to restore and protect Zeekoevlei.
Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club recently met with Alderman Andrews, Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, to discuss and plan our partnership with the City of Cape Town in supporting the dredging initiative to save our water body.
We are proud and excited to be working alongside the City of Cape Town towards the betterment of all Cape Town water catchment areas, and to be playing an active role in building a better future for water use in our city.
This is exactly the kind of collaboration and action that Zeekoevlei needs, and we are committed to doing everything we can to see it through. Together, we are making a difference. 💙

We'd love for you to join us on Thursday, 16 April from 6–7pm on Zoom as we discuss the current state of the club and the next steps regarding the vlei closure.
We'll be hearing from Jeremy Rose, who will provide a dredging update, as well as Pete Willson, who will be sharing a financial update and outlining the committee's planned next steps.

Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club, together with affected schools and rowing clubs, has issued a formal letter to the City of Cape Town demanding immediate action and transparency on the continued closure of Zeekoevlei.
This vital public resource supports thousands of learners, athletes, and community members; its prolonged closure is unacceptable.
We call for a clear plan to reopen Zeekoevlei and restore access for all.
