Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has explained why Junior Boks captain Riley Norton was called up ahead of the more experienced JJ van der Mescht

“We all think JJ is a wonderful player. It’s not to say that JJ is not a player for the future, but what we do currently probably suits what Riley gives us.”

“One player is a lineout caller who is very athletic around the park. The other is a bruiser who plays very direct. It depends on what you need for a specific Test match.”

“We always like to have four nines in our squad – we feel a little bit more comfortable with four nines. Having Cobus [Reinach] back, he is an experienced guy at 35 years old; Faf is also an experienced guy, a little bit older. When we pick a squad, we normally pick one fairly experienced nine, one who is maybe still finding his feet or in the good time of his career, almost in the middle of his career.

“So that’s why, we saw Faf, we worked with him now, and we have always rated Herschel [Jantjies] and earmarked him. We know what Faf can do now; we trained with him, we know what Cobus can do, but now we will have a look at Herschel.”

“We know now, from an attacking point of view and technically, how good Tony Brown is, but I think this is one element that we don’t see,” said De Villiers

“I saw him coming down obviously from the coaching box to Vusi Moyo. Now all the other reserves were on already; he came down to him just to settle him down and just have a quick little word about what he’s expecting of him.”

“Arm around the shoulder and that’s it,”.

“Go back up to the coaches’ box. And I think that people don’t realise the value of that, not just being technically good, but being able to really care about the individual.

Rassie Erasmus on facing England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

“The England squad is good – their average age is about 27, and Test caps around 32, so it’s a young yet experienced squad,” he continued.

“There are a few older players in their 30s, which brings the experience, but the young guys will add fearlessness into a team that was in the World Cup semi-final (in 2023), and who have competed really well off the back of the Premiership.

“It’s a very competitive squad, and we know we’ll have to work really hard against them at Ellis Park next week if we want to get a win.”
