Coach or leader, who is becoming better because of your leadership? 🫂

At some point, success stopped being about how well I performed.

As a player, the scoreboard was clear.

Did I play well?

Did I score?

Did we win?

Then I became a coach.

And the question changed:

Who is getting better because I’m here?

Coaching taught me that leadership is not simply about demanding more from people.

It is about creating enough trust for honest feedback, accountability and growth.

Trust does not remove accountability.

It makes real accountability possible.

Today, whether I am coaching, mentoring or advising, I measure success differently.

Not only by what I achieve.

But by what grows in the people around me.

Who is becoming better because of your leadership?

For most of my adult life, I always knew what I was preparing for next.⏰⚽️👀

Then one day there was no next match.

Training had purpose.

Recovery had purpose.

Performance had a scoreboard.

When playing ended, the routine disappeared faster than the identity attached to it.

And I had to confront a different question:

What do I do with everything football taught me now?

That question eventually became part of my next chapter.

If you are moving on from football, coaching or another long career, start by asking:

What did I achieve?

What problems did I repeatedly solve?

What decisions do I understand now because I lived them?

Your career can end without the value of your experience ending with it.

If that is where you are, my **Trusted Advisor Accelerator** was built to help you work through that process.

Sometimes we keep asking God for something new while trying to carry it with the same old habits.🫂

That is why this scripture has become such a foundational leadership teaching for me:

“New w**e must be put into fresh w**eskins.”
Luke 5:38

As coaches and leaders, we can want:

A better culture.

Better staff.

Better players.

Better results.

A better environment.

But if the person leading it has not grown, the new thing may not have the capacity to last.

Leadership is not only about what we want to build.

It is also about who we are becoming while we build it.

Think clearly.
Lead people.
Build the environment.

And ask yourself:

What old thinking, behaviour or leadership habit may no longer be able to carry what God is trying to develop next?

Sometimes the person everyone is looking to for answers is still trying to work out the answer themselves.🙋‍♂️

That is one of the realities of leadership we do not talk about enough.

The higher the responsibility gets, the less comfortable it can feel to say:

“I don’t know yet.”
But leaders are still human.

Pressure can cloud judgement.

Strong leaders need somewhere they can think without politics, performance or pretending.

My simple framework is:

Think clearly.
Lead people.
Build the environment.

If you lead inside football, I created The Next Level Leadership Intensive: Football Organisation Edition as a practical self-study guide for exactly this work:

I was never really the popular, glamorous player. But I learned how to survive.🤷‍♂️

My career was not built on hype.

It was built on being useful.

Speed. Goals. Work. Adaptability. Relentlessness.

And that is something young players need to understand.

Coaches do not only notice your football.

They also notice:

Your attitude.

Your body language.

Your coachability.

Your communication.

Your professionalism.

And how you respond after mistakes.

If you are preparing for a trial, do not prepare only your football.

I put the complete before, during and after plan into **3 Steps to a Successful Trial**.

Coach, the dressing room always notices when the best player gets different rules.🤷‍♂️⚠️

I experienced environments where poor behaviour was tolerated because the player was talented.

Very little may be said openly.

But something changes.

Players start questioning the standard.

Resentment grows.

Trust weakens.

That is why one of the coaching lines I believe in is:

“Culture is what happens when the coach is quiet.”

But those words mean nothing if the standard only applies to the easy players to discipline.

Leadership character is tested when doing the right thing becomes expensive.

If difficult player conversations are part of your reality, I created **15 Power Scripts for Modern Coaches** to help coaches lead them with greater clarity and purpose.

Professional football was my career. It was never the real asset.💡

The career eventually ended.

But the lessons stayed.

Pressure. People. Culture. Communication. Adaptation. Leadership.

Over time I realised that experience only becomes valuable when you can extract the lesson and make it useful to someone else.

Your story is not automatically an asset.
Your extracted wisdom can become one.

Build authority.
Create influence.
Package expertise.

What have you lived long enough to understand that someone else could benefit from?

For years, football gave me an easy answer to the question: “Who are you?”🎭

Professional footballer.

The contract, selection, recognition and status all reinforced it.

Until I had to confront a harder question:

Who am I when the role changes?

Leadership has taught me that identity cannot be built entirely around what we do.

Titles change.

Positions change.

Applause changes.

The person underneath has to remain grounded.

The healthier the person beneath the title, the healthier the leader wearing it.

If your role changed tomorrow, would you still know who you are?

Everyone saw the opportunity. Very few saw what it cost to step into it.👀

At 25, I moved from South Africa to Sweden.

For the first time, I was away from my childhood home, my familiar environment and the relationship I had known since I was 17.

People saw the football contract.

I felt the uprooting.

New food. New culture. New expectations. New ways of living and working.

I quickly learned that what worked in my previous environment was not automatically going to work in the next one.

I had to listen more.
Observe more.
Let go of some things.
Learn others.

Sometimes growth requires more than a new opportunity.

It requires a new version of you.

What is your next level forcing you to leave behind?
