This week my wife, our four-month-old son, and I experienced something that has left me deeply concerned.
While walking back to our vehicle at a busy shopping centre, a man in uniform approached my wife while she was carrying our son. Not noticing me nearby, he asked her how much he could buy our baby for. She immediately walked toward me. When he saw me, he casually changed tone, complimented our child, and left.
At the time, I dismissed it as an inappropriate attempt at humour.
A few days later, we learned of a similar incident involving a friend at a different shopping centre. A trolley attendant repeatedly offered to buy her baby, and even insisted he would buy her other child as well. She later told us she felt relieved when I approached because the interaction made her uncomfortable.
In isolation, these incidents may be brushed off as “bad jokes.” Taken together, they raise serious concerns.
Human trafficking is a real and present threat. Joking about buying someone’s child is not humorous. It is inappropriate, alarming, and unacceptable.
As parents, we must remain vigilant. It appears that mothers alone with young children may be approached more easily. Whether you are a mother or father, please stay alert in crowded and public spaces. Trust your instincts. Set clear boundaries. Remove yourself from uncomfortable situations immediately.
You have the right to feel safe. You have the right to protect your children. You have the right to challenge suspicious behaviour.
If anyone else has experienced similar incidents, I encourage you to share your experience privately. Awareness is one of the strongest tools we have.
Stay alert. Stay prepared. Protect what matters most.
