Janine Goes:
I have been a paediatrician for 25 years, and have dealt with many children who are over weight, lack muscle tone, core strength and have poor postures. Being passionate about health and fitness, running many marathons and the comrades, I realised that there is a need to improve health and wellness in children and get them moving.
If kids are not into mainstream sports then they are generally leading very sedentary lifestyles with poor nutrition. The habits that are ingrained in early childhood are often carried into adulthood. Statistics show that the incidence of obesity is rapidly rising and consequently the incidence of many lifestyle diseases (cardiovascular, stroke, type2 diabetes, orthopaedic problems, endocrine disorders and cancer).
It all began with the idea of playing ‘old style’ games with children...leap frog, tug of war, hop scotch...games that are familiar to many of us but kids of today would probably roll their eyes implying, “what’s that?”.
