Today we honour the men and women who stepped into a war they never chose. Their sacrifice was born not from desire, but from necessity a last option in a world that had run out of peace. Because of them, we stand here. Because of them, we are free.
ANZAC Day reminds us that history was not gentle. It was dark, painful, and real and yet, even in the darkest hours, light found a way through.
There were friendships forged in trenches that lasted lifetimes.
There were love letters written by candlelight that travelled oceans and kept hearts alive.
There were nurses who held strangers’ hands so they didn’t die alone, and soldiers who shared their last rations so someone else might see another sunrise.
There were stories of courage, of humour in impossible places, of people who grew stronger than they ever believed they could be.
These moments of humanity, small, bright, stubborn, are the proof that even in war, the human spirit refused to break.
And now, when the world feels heavy and uncertain, when conflict whispers at the edges of our headlines, we cannot let fear consume us. We stay steady. We stay grounded. We remember the past so the past does not repeat itself.
Yes, some days feel dark. Yes, it is hard right now. But just as they did, we hold onto the light, the stories, the lessons, the resilience and trust that things will work themselves out.
Today is not just remembrance.
It is gratitude.
It is responsibility.
It is hope.
Lest we forget.
