Summer Camp Day Three Class Two: Kumite
with guest instructor Matt Payne

Our last class of the day and of the gasshuku needed to be a good one after 11 1/2 tough hours of training and so it proved to be.

Guest Instructor Matt, with a background in Kyokushinkai and a fondness for grappling, introduced the class to full-contact conditioning and Kyokushin sparring.

Acknowledging our BJJ class the previous day he also explored a couple of takedowns and the course ended with rounds of contact sparring that included takedowns and grappling. For those unfamiliar with contact sparring the class was an excellent introduction to it and for those more familiar it was a pleasure to mix it up - especially with the addition of taking it down to the floor!

And so ended this years Gasshuku.

Thanks again to all who attended. There is rumbling of a winter Gasshuku which will likely be held in January. We just need to find a waterfall in Wales large enough to train under...

Summer Camp Day Three Class One: Kata

The second to last session of the Gasshuku focused on kata. Key points were relaxing through the movement and using head movements to initiate not only turning but, in some cases the generation of speed for techniques.

The first hour explored these concepts via Kihon kata and variants. Students were invited to explore the impact on their kata of changing the standard gedan-barai for another block or of adding a kick in place of a step. It was for them to first feel the impact the change had on their hips, shoulders, arm & leg placement and to then utilize those changes to produce a fast and effective technique.

The second session introduced students to Sochin and they were invited to explore the contrasting slow and fast movements within the kata, with the grounded nature of Sochin-dachi and do so while remaining relaxed yet focused. Or, in the case of those learning the kata for the the first time, to jst try to remember the moves!

Summer Course Day Two Class Four: Kihon
with guest instructor Rhys Sensei from Yama no kaze Karate-do

Our last class of the day and despite the fatigue setting in, everyone applied themselves with gusto. Rhys Sensei led a class focusing on the connection between the feet and hands and everything in between.

Using Goju-ryu Sanchin drills we practised a range of blocks and strikes with body tension and lots of slapping...this gave us an opportunity to key into the muscles that we were using to perform the movements.

This was followed with lighter faster kihon training to release the tension and concluded with pad work to explore generation of power through speed with static basic punches, stepping punches and close quarter punches and elbows.

Summer Course Day Two Class Three: Intro to BJJ
with special guest instructor Jonny from .bjj

We were delighted that local BJJ instructor Jonny from Subworx agreed to lead an intro to grappling on this years Gasshuku. Suffice to say all of the students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to do some grappling and ground work. Apart from making a refreshing change, the class was nicely physical in a very different way from karate.

Jonny introduced the class to some basic BJJ takedowns, explored BJJ's concept of working at 3 levels, and demonstrated the importance of grip to maintain control during a grapple.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the class with one notable response being 'yes, I was able to spar without getting hit!'

Summer Course Day Two, Class Two
Possibly getting a little stir-crazy.

All the Junro's got a look in today. After 2 to 3 rounds of each Junro, the class focused on practising a particular sequence of each kata that exemplified the main learning point from that kata that students had the most difficulty with.

Junro shodan - using one arm without hikite to apply several techniques with speed (and hence power)
Junro nidan - using two arms simultaneously to apply different techniques with speed (and hence power)
Junro sandon - using the same striking arm to apply different techniques within the same movement (a next level form of junro shodan)
Junro yondan - using body movement and hip rotation to generate speed and power forward (turning the long way round...)
Junro godan - slide, slide, slide - the yori ashi

Summer Course Day Two Class One:
And the cracks are beginning to show... Stretching, conditioning and kihon focused on kicks.

The first class of the day, began with a half hour of stretching that combined classic shotokan stretches with basic yoga to ease everyone back into the day. A half hour of conditioning drills focused on hip strength and stability followed.

The final hours session looked at controlled kicking drills, with everyone's favorite - catching the chambered leg - both before and after kick release.

Mae-, mawashi-, yoko- (thrust and snap)-, oshiro- and ura-mawashi-geri were all practised with gusto 😁

Summer Course Day One Class Two
With guest instructor Tony Springett Sensei

Our first kumite class led by Tony Sensei took students on a whistle-stop tour of karate sparring drills with an explanation of their purpose and ex*****on.

Gohon (5 step), Sanbon (3 step) and Ippon (1 step) were practised alongside drills for Kaeshi Ippon (give back/return), jiyu ippon (1 step free) and jiyu kumite (free style).

An excellent primer on sparring and a sweaty session all round!
