We are very sad to announce the sudden passing of Gary Chalmers, Harmony Horse Trials' organizer for well over a decade.
We would like to share the tribute that was written for Gary when he received the ACCC-Q Builder's Award in 2018. He was an extraordinary man and will be sadly missed.
“When Gary Chalmers first volunteered to help at Harmony Horse Trials over 10 years ago, it was like in so many cases, originally to help out at an event that his daughter was participating in.
This ‘volunteering parent’ role plays itself over and over in all kinds of ways – sports like hockey and soccer, and social activities from school ‘lunch-Mom’ to Boy Scout leaders.
However, I don’t know how often it happens that the child (in this case, Vicky) STOPS competing and the parent winds up RUNNING the event for the next decade (or two!).
Thankfully for Harmony Horse Trials, Gary did just that – stepping in at a critical juncture when the original members of the organizing committee were retiring and the event was in danger of disappearing from the calendar.
In Gary, we got a man with the commitment, leadership abilities, and organizational skills to make the transition a smooth one.
Recognizing his relative lack of experience in Eventing, Gary immersed himself in all facets of the sport and educated himself -in everything from the technical aspects contained in the 18,000-page rulebook, to the more practical ones... like the number of Johnny-on-the-Spots required.
He surrounded himself with capable and experienced people and learned from the best.
There have been a lot of ups and downs over the years (is anyone in horses surprised by THAT??) and Gary has dealt calmly and competently with everything from the tragic loss of a horse to a sudden storm blowing through and taking out every tent, port-a-potty and, of course, the just-set-up stadium jumping fences.
There have been officials who were unfortunately late - and officials who never showed up... there were the occasional rule challenges and the ongoing challenge of recruiting and training volunteers...too much water in the pond or not enough water in the pond...too hot, too wet, computer glitches, and walkie-talkie mismatches. Gary has kept his head – and his temper – and in a thoughtful and practical manner solved the immediate problem and kept the show on the road. His ready smile and sense of humor were always appreciated by all who participated.
Now, over 10 years later, GARY is the capable and experienced organizer and Harmony is one of the most well-run events on the calendar.

Gary will be greatly missed in the horse community and amongst all those that crossed his path.

Nous sommes très tristes d'annoncer que la vie de Gary Chalmers s’est éteinte soudainement. Il fût l'organisateur du Concours complet Harmonie depuis plus d'une décennie.
Nous aimerions partager l'hommage écrit en 2018 lorsqu'il a reçu le prix ‘ACCC-Q Builder's Award’. Il était un homme extraordinaire et il nous manquera beaucoup.
« Lorsque Gary Chalmers s'est porté volontaire pour la première fois pour aider avec le concours Harmonie il y a plus de 10 ans, c'était comme, dans de nombreux cas, à l'origine pour aider lors d'un événement auquel sa fille participait.
Ce rôle de « parent bénévole » se joue à maintes reprises sous toutes sortes de façons - des sports comme le hockey et le soccer, des activités sociales telles que surveillante des dîners à l’école, chefs Scouts, etc…
Cependant, je ne sais pas combien de fois il arrive que l’enfant (dans ce cas, Vicky) CESSE la compétition et que le parent finit par GÉRER l’événement pendant la prochaine décennie (ou deux!).
Heureusement pour le concours Harmonie, c'est exactement ce que Gary a fait – il intervient à un moment critique lorsque les membres originaux du comité organisateur prenaient leurs retraites et que l'événement risquait de disparaître du calendrier.
Avec Gary, nous avons eu un homme avec de l'engagement, des capacités de leadership et des compétences organisationnelles nécessaires pour que la transition se déroule sans heurts.
Sachant qu’il manquait les connaissances en concours complet, Gary s'est plongé dans toutes les facettes de ce sport et s'est éduqué dans tout les aspects. Il étudie les aspects techniques dans les livres de règles de 18,000 pages, allant aux points plus pratico-pratiques tels que le nombre de toilettes portatives requises.
Il s'est entouré de personnes compétentes et expérimentées et s’est renseigné auprès des professionnels.
Il eut beaucoup de hauts et de bas au fil des années (dans le monde équestre, sommes-nous surpris?) et Gary a géré tout ceci avec brio et compétence; de la perte tragique d'un cheval jusqu’à une tempête soudaine qui aplatissait les tentes, les toilettes portatives et les sauts d’obstacles.
Il eut des officiels qui étaient malheureusement en re**rd ou qui ne se sont pas pointés... Il y avait le défi occasionnel des règles et le défi perpétuel de recruter et de former les bénévoles ... trop d'eau dans l'étang… pas assez d'eau dans l'étang... trop chaud, trop humide, problèmes informatiques et incompatibilités des walkie-talkies. Gary gardait son humeur, et de façon réfléchie et pratique il pouvait résoudre les problèmes immédiats. Le concours continuait malgré tout. Son grand sourire et son sens d'humour ont toujours été appréciés par tous qui le connaissent.
Aujourd'hui, plus de 10 ans plus t**d, Gary est un organisateur compétent et expérimenté et Harmony est l'un des événements les mieux organisés du calendrier. C'est avec grand plaisir que
l'ACCC-Q remet à Gary le prix ACCC-Q Builder's Award! Au nom de tous ceux qui ont participé au concours complet Harmonie, je tiens à remercier vivement Gary pour tout ce qu'il a fait ... »
Gary nous manquera beaucoup dans la communauté équestre et parmi tous ceux qui ont croisé son chemin.
