IN MEMORIAM - Vorige zondag werd een groepje van 5 fietsers in Gent aangereden door een dronken autobestuurder die al tien jaar geen geldig rijbewijs meer had. Twee van de fietsers overleefden het niet: Joris Rogiers & Steven De Laender, beiden 45 jaar oud. Die laatste naam klonk me bekend in de oren.

Steven nam in 2020 deel aan de eerste Little Belgium (dat was meteen ook zijn debuut 300km). Kort daarna schreef hij zich ook in voor Les Coeurs du Télévie, een hart van 200km voor het goede doel.

In het kader van het UCI World Championship 2021 in Leuven gidste hij mee een groepje buitenlandse wielertoeristen over de Brabantse kasseien. Onlangs pakte hij me nog een KOM af in de regio Lochristi.

Elke fietser die sterft is er één teveel. Maar sommige komen harder aan omdat je ze kent en ze je passie deelden. Veel sterkte aan de familie, en ons medeleven ook aan de 3 overlevende fietsvrienden.

LITTLE BELGIUM - The 2023 'Flandrien edition' took place last Sunday. And the least that could be said is that the weather made it a challenge for the 120 riders. The announced soft drizzle alternated with nicer periods until 18h00.

Then the 'hemelsluizen' literally opened and those who had not yet finished, faced near-apocalyptic conditions. Many made it home and completed the , some scratched, but all were happy to take shelter at the welcoming checkpoints. An epic edition to ride again on a sunny day later this summer!

LITTLE BELGIUM - Today is the last day to register (closure at 21h00). Make sure to get your last-minute ticket for a great Belgian ride through amazing places.

Additionally, I’m super happy to announce our collaboration with Taverne ‘t Hemelrijck. This restaurant is located literally ‘on’ the Muur from where you can see the TCR riders warm up and set off.

I’m really happy we can have our Geraardsbergen checkpoint here, as it was my very first choice. Enjoy the excellent food and the view.

LITTLE BELGIUM - Here is the programme of the Transcontinental Race start. As you pass in Geraardsbergen, you can pay them a visit, cheer on them or have a drink together.

🚴‍♀️ 10-16h Registrations and bike check: Participants must show proof of their insurance, identity and have their bike inspected before the race. Any failure here may result in a DNS.

🚴 17h-17h45 Official rider's briefing in Zaal De Spiraal (when you cross the river, left). If you are allowed in, try not to disturb. It's a beautiful and solemnous moment for the riders and the organisers, before the big adventure.

🚴‍♂️ 21h-22h Participants, friends and family gather on the Grote Markt. Participants from other editions have a friendly chat and the level of adrenalin rises.

💥 22h Start of the TCR. After a short speech of the organisers, a city clerk counts down and the group sets off. While they ride a first loop around the city, the supporters walk up the Muur with torches. When they pass a second time, everybody shouts and claps. Then it's silent and the night weighs in.

LITTLE BELGIUM - On any given Sunday there is no way to hide from . You can plan your trip cautiously, it will always be disturbed by some local race. Which is cool!

Yesterday it was my turn to be blocked in Deinze and Zottegem while checking the full itinerary again. It’s now fully corrected and shortened to 303km.

By the way: the registration website will be open until 19/07 at 21h00.
