WINTER BOWLS
Ross was happy that he beat his brother; Jan H was delighted that her team won their first game; Claire was pleased to play several brilliant bowls, while the rest of us were happy that it was a gorgeous day.

Week four of our Winter Bowls tournament today was generously sponsored by Christine Birss, Bayleys Real Estate. Unfortunately, Christine was unwell and unable to attend so her colleague Stephen stepped in to present the prizes. Thank you both for your continuing support of our club.

Many of the games were very close with a win being scored by just one point.

Prize Winners
1st – Dusty, Faye, Liz (OTP) 3 wins, 17 ends
2nd – Warwick, Bruno, Neville (Mangawhai) 3 wins, 15 ends
3rd – Skye, Roly, Barry (Waipu) 2 wins, 16 ends
Consolation – Janet, Terry, Kim (Waipu)
Raffles: Jan H, Liz, Faye, Brony.

Thanks to Johnny F for setting up the rinks, Paul for looking after the bar, Mary and Shelley for running the kitchen assisted by Betty (dishes) and Lorraine Mc (prep), and to Bob for organising and selling the raffles, not forgetting all of his willing punters.

Points Ladder: After four weeks, the top team has secured 11 wins while the bottom-placed team has 2.5 wins. After next week’s games (half-way point), each team will have played every other team once.

WINTER BOWLS

The saying ‘having an eye on the prize’ was interpreted differently by some for week 3 of our Winter Bowls Series yesterday. By lunchtime, with two 8-end games completed, four teams realizing that they were not going to win a meat prize decided the consolation chocolate fish would be an achievable goal.

In a thrilling game, the team that had won the previous two weeks (Bruno, Warwick & Neville) was defeated 10-8 by Alf, John, & Tobs to shake up the table.

Over the course of this 10-week competition, each team plays every other team twice, so next week will bring new challenges.

Many thanks to Waipu ITM owner Stuart Knights, for sponsoring the day. He was on-hand to present the prizes, and afterwards he advised that Waipu ITM now has a showroom displaying good quality bathroom and kitchen cabinetry and fittings for anyone wishing to upgrade or build anew. Please pop in and support this business whenever possible.

Prizewinners
1st - Roly, Skye, Barry (Waipu) 3W18E36P
2nd - Alf, John D, Tobs (Waipu) 3W14E30P
3rd – Janet, John C, Kim (Waipu) 2W19E39P
Consolation – Jan H, Marie, Jill (Mangawhai).

President Bob was back on deck playing bowls and selling raffles. He thanked Paul for serving the drinks, Mary and Shelley in the kitchen, and for everyone for coming along to WBC.
[Thanks also to Lyn for helping clear up].

See you next week.

WINTER BOWLS

By all accounts, week two of our winter tournament featured a superb day of bowling - the conditions, atmosphere, food, and fun all contributed to the congenial mix.

[First and second places are the same as week one]
1st - Bruno, Warwick, Neville (Mangawhai) 3 wins, 17 ends, 39 points

3rd - Skye, Roly, Barry (Waipu) 2 wins, 16 ends, 29 points
Consolation – Ann, Peter, Keith (Waipu)

In Pres. Bob’s and Shelley’s absence, several members stepped in to help things run smoothly. Special thanks to Jan A (raffles), Mary, Jan A, Merv, Haley, and Norm (kitchen), Keith (photos), and George and Paul on the bar. [My apologies if I have missed anyone].

WINTER BOWLS COMPETITION
What a day! Cold showers during the first game didn’t take long to dissipate bringing sunny, dry, and very warm conditions.

Teams from OTP (1), Mangawhai (4), Waipu (10), and composite Mangawhai/Waipu (2) played two 8-end games in the morning, with a short break between, and then after lunch one 10-end game.

Many thanks to AGM CONSULTING 2020 LTD (Sally & Allan Mehrtens’s company) for sponsoring today’s games. Their granddaughter, who lives in Australia, made a surprise visit so Sally left early and was not on hand to present the prizes.

RESULTS
One team had no wins, one team had three, and seven managed two wins.
1st: Bruno, Ron, Warwick (Mgwi) – 16E, 32Pts
2nd: George, Mary, Harry (Waipu) – 17E, 42Pts
3rd: Jackie, Eric, Ian (Mgwi/Wai) – 16E, 33Pts

CLOSING DAY / PRIZEGIVING

It was great to see 55 members turn up for yesterday’s ‘Closing Day’ (officially the close of our summer season) and the annual prizegiving. The sun was shining, wind subdued, and everyone in good spirits.

After a slow start, players were eventually organised into teams (triples) to play one game of eight ends, followed by a corner-to-corner. Nothing too strenuous and lots of fun. Carol, Terry, and Keith earned the most points in their game, while John D was closest to the corner; all were awarded a free drink as their prize.

A huge amount and variety of food was provided for afternoon tea – thanks to all for your contribution and to the ladies who helped in kitchen prep and tidy up i.e. Mary, Betty, Sheryl, Jillian, Jan A, Heather, Hayley & Shelley.

President Bob welcomed and thanked everyone for their attendance, in particular our Patrons Ivy and Malcolm. Apologies were received from: Clark, Debs, Jo, Ken, & Skye.

BUSINESS HOUSE

Two teams didn’t arrive for finals' night, but after Tobs reshuffled the draw and organised some extras, play eventually got underway at 5.45pm.

Great to welcome Duncan’s parents, Sheryl and Stewart – thanks Sheryl for filling in at short notice, and best wishes to you both for your trip to Raro.

It was getting dark by the time the games finished and the eating started. Thanks to everybody who contributed to the feast.

Prizegiving followed. Pres. Bob initially thanked the HOUSE OF TRAVEL, WHANGAREI for their generous sponsorship of the weekly and overall prizes, drawing a round of applause.

Far from ‘useless’, as their team’s name (T**s On A Bull) would suggest, Ventry, Shannon and Jayden led the tournament from week two. However, in last night’s final games scoring a draw and a loss allowed the third placed team to leapfrog into top spot overall.

Night’s winners:
1st – Cove Days ('Skin', Sarah, Jess)
2nd – Muzza’s Mates (Murray, 'Mud', Isaac)

Overall winners:
1st – Muzz’s Mates (Murray, 'Mud', Isaac – John C subbed when Murray was unable to play)
2nd – T**s On A Bull (Ventry, Shannon, Jayden)
3rd – Cove Days ('Skin', Sarah, Jess).

Hard luck Jo's '3 Gs' team on just missing out.

Consolation – Ranburn team.

Thanks Paul and George for keeping the drinks flowing, Mary, Lorraine, and Shelley in the kitchen and Jo for cleaning up, Bob for his raffles and everyone for coming along each week to make this a successful tournament.

Bob announced that we will continue to have some bowling & socializing on Thursdays, maybe for 2-3 weeks, from 4.30pm–6.30pm (a shorter time due to daylight saving ending this weekend).

Happy Easter and see you all next week.

BUSINESS HOUSE FINAL NIGHT

A reminder that this has been moved to Wednesday 1st April (tomorrow).

Even if wet, come along at the usual time (5.30pm) for socializing, prizegiving, and a shared meal. Please bring a plate to contribute.
