Originally from Austria, I have been living in Hanoi for 10 years. I obtained my certification in personal training in Germany and have been working as a personal trainer and group trainer for more than 7 years. I am providing Mobile Personal Training in Hanoi, usually but not exclusively based around Tay Ho and surrounding areas, delivering in-home and gym workout sessions at your preferred location.

When I first started my own fitness journey, unfortunately I did not have access to the support of a personal trainer. 😕

This came for a price. During the first year, my own training was unstructured. After the initial progress, my gains stalled. Using too heavy weights and poor form did not only hinder the progress but also soon caused first injuries.

This was long time ago. The years to follow I was fortunate to learn from personal trainers, then to become a fitness professional myself, and eventually to be a mentor to the next generation of aspiring trainers.

Looking back, I wish I would have exploited the my own initial training phase more effectively by seeking professional advice earlier.

Personal training can be a great way to start or boost your fitness journey. I am always thrilled to share my knowledge around fitness & health. Not only during regular sessions but also through occasional or single sessions.

Can you believe it? I once stumbled upon a major commercial gym here in Hanoi that was actually airing ice cream ads on their TVs 😱

Thankfully, the fitness industry in Vietnam has undergone remarkable growth in recent years. From conventional commercial gyms to niche boutique fitness centers, dynamic group class studios, serene yoga spaces, vigorous martial arts hubs, and even heart-pounding CrossFit boxes – the options are diverse.

Remember, there's no universal formula. Your perfect gym match is all about what sparks your interest. Finding what excites you will supercharge your motivation and keep you consistent on your fitness journey.

However, let's be real – a gym flashing ice cream ads on their screens should set off some serious alarms. It's a clear indication that the establishment isn't genuinely invested in the health and wellness of its members. That's definitely a place to steer clear of!

🎄🏋️‍♂️ The Festive Season and Exercising 🏋️‍♂️🎄

To no surprise various cultures have many different ways to approach their main festive season. Interestingly this even applies to people's fitness regime.

Here in Vietnam it's quite common that people try to step up their training and fitness approaching the festive season. In the prospect of seeing all their relatives and friends during the holidays, people seem to be more motivated to get in shape.

Oddly in the Western culture it seems to be quite the opposite. Not that people do not want to be seen in a good shape. But with the outlook of the holidays ahead, too often people think all the good progress they make the weeks before, will be wasted with the feasts later, and then almost give up all together.

So how much should you stress about workouts during the holidays?
Not too much actually.

For many people the holidays are one of the highlights of the year. It's the time to recover, spend time with your dearest, and spoil yourself a litte. Good so. The mind need this, and the body will cope with the bad diet and laziness for a few days.

However, we are talking about 1 week of taking it easy, or maximum 2 weeks. Before and after that you should keep up and get back to normal routines quickly. The longer you keep up "sweet" life, the worse the "damage" will be, and the longer it will take in the new year to get back to your previous bests.

Many people have been reaching out to get first-hand information to what degree personal training is possible at the moment in Hanoi, and with what restrictions gyms are allowed to operate at the moment.

Gyms in Hanoi had been officially allowed to re-open start of November, restricted to 50% capacity and only able to allow members to participate who have been fully vaccinated.

Not all commercial gyms have been able to re-open yet, but for example the place where I am mainly based, The Fitness Village, has resumed operation again.

Also most residence buildings have opened their gyms already and allow their residents to bring trainers from outside in again.

At all those locations, 1-on-1 personal training is not restricted at the moment, as long the rules mentioned above are considered.

To assure everyone's safety and best health, I am monitoring the situation daily, implementing any changed requirements and recommended safety measurements.

Again it is the time of the year when people are thinking about their new year's resolution.

There are 2 mayor mistakes people often make that are hindering them from succeeding, especially when it comes to weight loss, fitness and health:

❌ People are trying to take 3 steps a time. Starving themselves or pushing hard at the gym with a frequency and that will unfeasible to maintain along the year.

❌ People are not changing their habits or lifestyle in the long-run. A fad diet of 6 weeks might help to lose some weight, but if you go back to old behaviors right after, that weigh will be back soon, and likely even more.

What is the point to lose an XX amount of weight as quickly as possible, to soon after put all back on, or even more.

So what is a better approach for this:

✅ Set a big goal, but then break it down into small steps, so small it is almost too easy to fail.

✅ Along the way create new healthy habits that will stay with you, not for the next week, or month only, ideally for the rest of your life.

For Example:
👍 Try to start eating better rather than eating just less.
👍 Be active a couple of days a week for the start, and increase from there.
👍 Walk more, take the stairs or use the bicycle to get around in the neighborhood.

One of my key priorities is always to help people becoming well, fit and healthy LONG-LASTING, retaining best possible functionality of our body up to an old age, to make our live most enjoyable in the long-run.
