Nathan Resnisk: Why Networking Is Key for an Entrepreneur’s Peace of Mind?

These days, it seems like almost everyone is trying to become an entrepreneur. In fact, it’s estimated that in the United States alone, around 550,000 people dive into the entrepreneurial world each month.

There are plenty of reasons behind entrepreneurship's appeal. After all, what could be better than being your own boss, doing what you love for a living and taking total control of your schedule?

While these are very real benefits to becoming an entrepreneur, there’s also no denying that running your own business can be very stressful — and in some cases, lonely. Running a solo business out of your home doesn’t always lend itself to many social opportunities.

In my own experiences as an entrepreneur, I’ve found that reaching out and taking advantage of networking opportunities has made a huge difference. This isn’t limited to face-to-face contact, either.

For entrepreneurs, seeking out both in-person and digital relationships can lead to new work opportunities — but more importantly, it can help you avoid the mental and emotional burnout that can cause would-be startups to fail.

Here’s a closer look at why reaching out and cultivating new relationships is so important for your business endeavors.

How Networking Makes a Difference
While most of us look at networking as a way of opening up new business opportunities, it actually has a far more important benefit: helping budding entrepreneurs achieve peace of mind. Research has consistently found that developing quality relationships — including in a work setting — is associated with better physical health and improved happiness.

It can even help us respond better to stress.

When I spoke with Nick Peroni, founder of Ecom Empires, about this subject, he explained, “It can be really hard to try to tackle a business-related challenge on your own. When you can talk things over with a mentor or fellow entrepreneur, it becomes so much easier to think clearly and not get overwhelmed by the situation.”

Ultimately, having strong relationships in place will make it easier to confront stressful situations. Talking things out with people you know and trust will help you find new solutions to your business problems. Even the simple act of reaching out to new people can help you build confidence for future client interactions.

Of course, networking can also have a more tangible impact on your business. A mentor or friend could point you to new ideas or opportunities you might not have known about in the past. Networking can help you find new business partners who will take your company to the next level or refer new clients to you. It can make it easier to find talented people to join your team.

Regardless of whether your efforts result in a new business opportunity or a friend who you can share ideas with, networking will provide improved outcomes from your entrepreneurial efforts.

Finding Networking Opportunities
Knowing that networking can relieve stress and help you improve your business is one thing, but how do you actually find networking opportunities? While social media has made it easier to reach out to new people in the business world, conferences and other networking events continue to be highly attended for a reason.

In reality, networking opportunities are everywhere. When I spoke with Michael Phuong, Director of Conversion World Conferences, he explained, “While industry conferences make it much easier to find likeminded people, every event you go to has the potential to be a new networking opportunity. You never know who you might meet at a sporting event or charity auction. While it may require that you get out of your comfort zone in order to make these new connections, the results are well worth the initial effort.”

Widespread use of social media has also opened up new digital networking opportunities — a major blessing for those who may not have the funds to travel to an expensive conference.

Professional groups on Facebook and LinkedIn make it easy to connect with other entrepreneurs, or you could try engaging with big-time influencers on Twitter. Even those relationships founded in the digital world can provide invaluable advice and emotional support.

Of course, whenever you interact with others, it pays to be authentic. People can tell when you’re only talking to them in the hopes of advancing your own career, and in reality, these types of networking efforts aren’t going to bring you peace of mind when the going gets tough.

Take a genuine interest in the lives and businesses of those you interact with so that you can form real friendships that everyone involved will value in the years to come, regardless of whether or not it results in a direct sale. Combine this interest with your passion for your own work, and you’ll make a lasting impression on those you meet.

Get Connected
While it’s true that networking isn’t always easy for the solo entrepreneur, it’s clear what a powerful impact it can have. As you seek out networking opportunities and form genuine relationships with others who are trying to make it in the business world, you’ll be able to create the support network you need to achieve lasting success.

26/02/2018

Nathan Resnick is a serial entrepreneur who currently serves as CEO of Sourcify, a marketplace of the world’s top manufacturers. Previously, he founded www.YesManWatches.com and www.CorkSupplyCo.com. Nathan has been a part of major projects on Kickstarter that have raised over one-million dollars in funding, Nathan prides himself on his ability to swiftly turn ideas into realities. Now he is on Medium to share his thoughts on his
business experience.

1. What are some challenges you faced when developing your venture? Was there any point when you thought it was over? That you were going to fail?

I started my first venture, Yes Man Watches, not knowing anything about business or entrepreneurship. Everything was a challenge, but that motivated me even more. One of the hardest hurdles when trying to bring a physical product to life is finding the right manufacturer. It literally took us over six months to find a manufacturer we trusted. During that process, I wasn’t sure we’d ever actually bring anything to life. The day our first watch prototype came has been one of the best days of my life.

2. As an entrepreneur how important has flexibility been in developing your venture?

If you aren’t flexible as an entrepreneur, I’d bet against you. What you started out to create, probably isn’t going to be your finished product. If you aren’t willing to adapt your designs, business model, or marketing strategies, chances are you will fail. Entrepreneurs that are successful focus on the data and results.

3. What was your spark, where did it come from?

My first real 9–5 job was a sales internship my freshman year of college where I made an endless amount of cold calls. Within a week I became the employee with the highest converting outbound calls and I was just an intern. That job taught me to work hard but I wasn’t satisfied — I felt like I was creating someone else’s dream.

After the internship, I read the Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. This book has literally become my entrepreneurship bible. It made me realize how easy it is to start a business. Though not all aspects are true across industries and it is now a bit updated, I’d still recommend the book to anyone looking to start a business.

4. Friendship

Surround yourself with those who will push your limits — whether it be in life or in business. I’ve gotten convinced to jump off 50 foot cliffs in the Italian Amalfi coast because two girls went before me and I didn’t want to be a woos. In business, I surround myself with other entrepreneurs who turn their ideas into realities. Your environment will have a big difference on who you become.

5. Rebelliousness

For some reason this makes me think of a time in Vegas with a few friends — we needed a knife to cut a lime for our drinks. My friends had called room service requesting one but because we didn’t order any food, the knife didn’t come. I told them I’ll take care of it — so I called room service, told them I had an $80 steak sitting here getting cold because they hadn’t brought me a steak knife. Within two minutes we had a knife to cut our lime. I believe in life you need to know how to ask questions in the right way to get the best results.

6. Delegation

To be honest, delegation used to be my biggest weakness as an entrepreneur. I’ll take this back to when Yes Man Watches was on the way to hitting six figures in sales during our first year. I felt this business was my baby and I wanted to do everything — I micromanaged and pretty much reviewed everything before it went anywhere. I rarely slept, as I was way too hands on with my business and didn’t really let any of my team members do anything.

The big shift came after a meeting with a fellow entrepreneur, Will Caldwell — Will told me I needed to trust my team. Without trust, you can’t grow. When I started to trust my team I was amazed to see the actual work they were able to get done. When you’re managing people and let them be responsible for their own work while instilling trust in them you’ll be amazed to see how talented some people are.

7. What is your best tip for entrepreneurs?

Stop talking and start doing. I think one of the biggest setbacks for an entrepreneur is thinking too much — you’ll think about ideas you want to pursue, try to network with others, and go back and forth with yourself about a business. The fact of the matter is no work happens during this phase. If you actually want to create a business as an entrepreneur, you need to actually do something.

I want to be clear that I’m not saying to never talk, but what I am saying is that when you’re talking, you’re not working.

When you learn from Jay Abraham, you get an unbeatable arsenal in the marketplace.
Jay teaches what's called the Strategy of Preeminence.

This strategy should become the base of your culture, hiring, marketing, client interaction – everything should flow from this belief system.

It should be the driving strategic force behind everything you do, everything your team does, every relationship you have, and the way you relate to everybody in your business and in your life.

The Strategy of Preeminence, Jay says, requires you to think differently about how you have operated your business and the way you have looked at your goal and purpose.

To be preeminent you need to be seen from now on by everyone you deal with as the definitive expert source and the most trusted adviser, as somebody who has taken on the responsibility of their governance, of their decisions—not as a generic seller of services or products.

Most people think they’ve got the hottest, coolest product or service or company in the market, and they want to be the fastest growing or the biggest, most successful dominant force in the market.

Jay says that’s admirable, but you should not fall in love with your company or your product or your service—you should fall in love instead with your client.
