I’m reaching out to the St. Croix community and beyond with a plea from the heart. Many of you might remember Nixon, affectionately known as Wiggles, from Freedom City Surf, Teres Veho, or her warm welcomes at Cottages by the Sea. For over eight beautiful years, she was my sister Nikki's most loyal companion, always by her side through the good and the tough times.
NixonWiggles, has a unique spirit –and unwavering devotion to Nikki. Together, they shared countless days at the beach, greeting friends and strangers alike. But when Nikki suffered a stroke a few years ago, their adventures slowed down, and Nixon became Nikki’s protector. On August 7th, a close friend found Nikki unconscious, with Nixon by her side, unwilling to leave her or let anyone near. Nikki was airlifted to Miami this past Tuesday Sept.24 and is now facing long-term care not knowing if she will ever fully recover.
Since then, sweet Nixon has been alone in their home for 51 days, missing the love and companionship she’s known for so long. Friends have been caring for her when they can, but Nixon needs more than just brief visits – she needs a home filled with the warmth and love she once knew.
I’ve been with Nixon during my short stay here, and today we went on a little adventure. She lit up just being around people again – riding in the car, feeling the sand under her paws at the beach. But when it was time to go back to the empty house, you could see how much she longed for company. She’s been so lonely, and it breaks my heart to think of her waiting day after day for someone to be with her again.
I know there are many dogs in need of homes, on this island and across the world. But Nixon is special. She was loved deeply every day by my sister, and in one traumatic moment, they were taken from each other. I’m asking for your help in finding Wiggles the loving home she so deserves – a place where she can once again be part of someone’s life, just as she was for Nikki. Please, if you or someone you know can open your heart and home to this sweet girl, reach out. She has so much love left to give.
