Practicing for the final round of the Caribbean Chess Cup. After 8 gruelling rounds of competition over 5 days. BVI faces its toughest match yet in Rd 9.

BVI vs BVI.

Whatever the outcome, we are all so extremely proud of these two young men and are excited to witness how much they’ve grown in developing their game and playing style during this tournament.

It’s been a fantastic opportunity to have this over-the-board experience ahead of the Uzbekistan Olympiad. Go !

Many thanks to the team from Federacion di Ahedres di Aruba for the fantastic job they have done with the organisation of the first Caribbean Chess Cup. The tournament was specifically designed to support regional federations as we all prepare for the 46th Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

For our two young national team players, Raheem Hodge and Dimitri Fungfook, it's their first tournament outside of the Virgin Islands. Along with weekly training for the national team by GM Sammy Shoker, this tournament is exactly what we needed to prepare our youngest Open team members for Samarkand.

Our hosts have been extremely gracious. The tournament is well organised. Competition has been fierce. The accommodations are spectacular, and the food - approved by two growing teenage boys!

Thank you for hosting us, Aruba Chess!

BVI faces three more rounds before the tournament concludes on Sunday.

A rainy day in Aruba did not stop Team BVI from putting in a strong performance in Round 4 of the Caribbean Chess Cup.

This morning, Raheem Hodge added another point to his tournament total, while Dimitri Fungfook fought hard for more than two hours against a formidable opponent. Both players return to the board at 6:30 pm for Round 5 of the nine-round tournament.

The young men are competing in the Under-18 category in their first international over-the-board tournament. Their participation is part of the BVI Chess Federation’s wider effort to prepare the national team for the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, this September

Participation in this tournament has been made possible by FIDE América, the regional governing body for chess in the Americas, and the Georges-Rhymer Institute for Public Policy, in honour of former Deputy Governor and a founding member of the BVI Chess Federation, Elton Georges, OBE. ♟️🇻🇬

After a tough morning in Round 2 against two of the tournament’s top Under-18 players - Aruba’s Juan Vergara Rivera and Patrick De Roo - Team BVI made an impressive comeback in Round 3.

Anferny Raheem Hodge and Dimitri Fungfook each bounced back with wins, bringing BVI’s combined total to 4 points after three rounds at the Caribbean Chess Cup.

The British Virgin Islands National Chess Team made a perfect start to the Caribbean Chess Cup last night, with Open Team players Anferny Raheem Hodge and Dimitri Fungfook both winning their opening-round games in their first regional competition.

The Elmore Stoutt High School students, who are also the youngest members of the BVI Open Team, faced opponents from host nation Aruba in the Under-18 category. The event marks Hodge and Fungfook’s first international over-the-board competition.

The tournament runs through 23 August, with players scheduled to play two rounds per day for a total of nine rounds. The competition gives BVI’s unrated players an opportunity to play FIDE-rated games and begin establishing their international FIDE ratings. It also provides valuable international experience against counterparts from across the Americas as Team BVI prepares for the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, this September.
