We haven’t talked camping in a while, so let’s talk about a campground we haven’t posted about before, Sweetwater Summit Campground, which is a San Diego County park. We have camped at Sweetwater twice and our review while perhaps not as glowing as our previous posts, is what it is.

The good: the grounds of the campground are well cared for, especially the upper sections which are newer. Sites have a concrete pad and compressed dirt patio areas which are nice and level. Each site has a fixed fire ring with plenty of room for chairs to be pulled up around it. The location is a bit off the beaten path but it is within driving distance of downtown San Diego which means you can take in all the local attractions. The campground is on a bluff which does have nice views. The best part about the park is that it is pretty inexpensive.

The bad: You can count on a fair bit of air traffic because the campground is in the traffic pattern for San Diego Airport. The check in times are inflexible. Nobody will be entering the park a minute prior to 2PM, so make sure you calculate your drive as you aren’t permitted to wait at the gate for check in. When you do check in have insurance and registration ready. They will not let you in without it (I forgot to put my sticker on my truck and this caused a fair bit of unnecessary headache). Because people aren’t allowed to filter in through the day the line to check in at 2PM is very long. It takes quite some time to traverse this.

The ugly: we have visited the park twice in the span of three years and in an effort to be nice, both visits have been less enjoyable due to the way the park is managed. Rules are VERY overbearing and leave you feeling like a child rather than a guest. This campground has a lot of great potential but there needs to be some managerial interest in changing for the better. We have had several talks with employees and it seems upper management is the problem. We may consider returning but unfortunately it won’t be anytime soon, there are so many other more enjoyable options out there.

About a year ago we decided we were tired of the leveling, chocking, uncoupling, and stabilizing process that comes with travel trailers (basically, we got spoiled with the hydraulic levelers on the motorhome). Since we sold our last travel trailer
Lippert Components, Inc. introduced Ground Control TT, a fully automatic electric leveling and stabilization system for travel trailers.

We purchased the system online and it arrived fairly quickly on a pallet via freight carrier. Because we are never afraid to get our hands dirty around here we installed it ourselves. Installation took one full day and was straightforward but very labor intensive. It involved a lot of heavy lifting, working on your back, and above your head which was a challenge. There was a significant amount of drilling into hard metal frame, so be sure to have a set of sharp drill bits on hand. Wiring was plug and play, but due to positioning the system controller and control panel in the front compartment there was a lot of extra cable to manage. Finding a way to route the control screen into the trailer in a way that looked factory was also a challenge, but ultimately worked out great.

Now when we arrive at our campsite it is simply chock, uncouple, and press auto level. If there were one criticism of the system, we have discovered that as the jacks extend all the way to the ground, the distance between jacks narrows and leads to a slightly less stable RV. By blocking the jacks we are able to maintain a wide footprint and the trailer is pretty solid. One year in and we are still the first to set up camp. After all, maximizing butt to chair time is what camping is all about!

Towing Hack! If you’re towing and you have little kids that touch everything, simply place a disposable glove over the ball hitch. This will keep little hands from getting grease all over!

Often the maintenance that comes with an RV is just aimed at keeping the coach working the same as it did before. Sometimes though there are projects that make the coach better than it was originally. These RecPro replacement LED patio lights are a huge improvement from the original lights that decided to fall off. Evenings at the campsite will now be better than ever; from grilling dinner to playing cards, these lights will ensure you’re never left in the dark.

Let’s talk camping! We recently packed up and travelled out to Calico ghost town for a long weekend trip. The last time I camped at Calico I was just a kid, but still vividly remember the fun I had hiking and climbing around the hills. This time my son got his turn at adventuring around.

Besides hiking calico has nearby trails for off-roading and shooting; not to mention the quaint touristy ghost town which is filled with shops, restaurants, and western reenact-ors.

The sites here can be pretty narrow. Checking out your prospective site via satellite would be a good idea if you have slides on both sides of your RV. Keep in mind the topography can be misleading and sites may not be as long as they appear in overhead views as well.

The restrooms are newer and fairly clean which was a surprise given the rural setting. If you plan on using the park showers be sure to bring quarters to feed the machine.
