Copied from a KMG Instructors Group post by Hans Marius Martinsen, but like I’ve always said, we train for the 99% who don’t train vs the 1-2% that do.
I put down some personal thoughts of the idea of training krav maga vs combat sports after reading so much hate and opinions from different people around on tiktok, instagram and so on..
What are your thoughts my fellow krav instructors?
***What is the point of training krav maga?***
(My personal opinion)
It is not made for a street fight like most people seem to think...
It is not made for a fight at all!
You learn krav maga so that you stay away from fights.
Imi Lichenfelt (the founder of KM) said:
So you may walk in peace and so that you dont need to kill.
Yes all competitor martial arts like BJJ,regular JJ, Thaiboxing, Wrestling, boxing, some karate, kickboxing and more would probably beat a quite experience krav maga practitioner in a mutual fight.
Why?
Because they train dynamic and body against body the whole time.
They get real good at timing/movement etc and most of them have real life experience with fighting in a ring ore a cage!
Most krav practitioners do not have that experience
(Some do)
So what is the point with krav maga ore any system based mostly on the self defense aspect and not the combat sport?
Krav maga/self defense are (ore at least should be taught) for the non mutual fights, like an ambush attack ore predatory violence.
Krav maga focus most of the training on 2 - 5 seconds situation with defending/ using hard (sometimes soft) counterattacks and get the hell away from there, if you can not get away then you create enough damage ore disturbance so the opponement can not go after you and in some worst case scenarios people may have to prepare to do real damage in order to survive ore save loved ones etc.
A street fight is not self-defence!
A street fight is a mutual fight between two monkeys measuring who has the biggest di..
They fight ore use violence for dominance, they use it for status, they use it to enforce rules of the group etc
A fight in a cage ore a ring is a somewhat mutual competiton/fight between martial artists who master they're skills to the point of perfection to be able to beat they're opponement with a set of rules, they even check out they're opponents skills and weakness before the fight itself.
A blind attack is a whole different beast!
An ambush ore a act of predatory violence is never mutual and there are absolutly no rules whatsoever!
Its a fast and brutal cowardly attack to subdue ore weakening the person they attack in order to get what they want with the most low risk for themselfs!
This could be money, a car, and even your body ore your loved ones body.
You are never ready/prepared, maybe that day you have a bad knee ore a sore throath, maybe you are tired after work, maybe you just not feeling well, you never know the attackers weakness, you dont know your surroundings, you dont know if its more then one attacker etc etc and there are no rules whatsoever.
This is the situations krav maga training to overcome, not a street fight ore a monkey dance between two people!
Last:
I love all of martial arts and i respect all of them in there own way.
But to be able to defend against violence you have to understand violence.
If you think a street fight between two monkeys ore a cage fight is violence then think again.
Facts:
Its not the scary stranger in the alley people have to be most worried about when it comes to violence..
The most violence cases happens with/from someone you know/love...
The people we let in to our lifes are the most dangerous (when we let the wrong ones in)
Why:
because we have our guard down, we trust them, we cant imagine they doing anything bad against us.
And in the cases a loved one etc decide to go dark, most cases the victim will use most of the energy and focus on asking why why why instead of fighting back/getting away from the situation..
Thats the hard cold truth, and if you are not aware of this, you will never ever be able ore prepared to do what needs to be done in order to get away safely.
Krav maga training try to prepare you for all this stuff but at the same time try to learn you how to avoid getting into this situations in the first place😊
