🏊‍♀️💙 Paisley finished lessons this year with some BIG accomplishments! 💙🏊‍♀️
Paisley loves the water, and this year we continued building the skills and confidence she needs to become a more independent swimmer.
She finished lessons:
🌊 Confidently moving through the water with her noodle
🌊 With a back float that is SO close to being completely independent
🌊 Submerging with a little motivation and encouragement
🌊 Becoming more comfortable and confident with each new challenge
We still have some things to conquer, and that's okay! Swimming skills don't have to happen all at once. We build them year after year, celebrating every bit of progress along the way.
Paisley enjoys the water, she's learning, and I have no doubt that she WILL succeed. ♡

🏊‍♂️💙 Elliot proved just how much he CAN do! 💙🏊‍♂️
Elliot is a nonverbal autistic swimmer who had previously been turned away from swimming lessons because he would drink the pool water. So when we met on Day 1, Mom was understandably nervous and came prepared to get into the pool with us.
Instead, I took Elliot by the hand, we entered the water together, and Mom got to sit back and watch. 💙
And then Elliot got to work!
🌊 We learned to blow bubbles instead of seeking oral input from the water
🌊 His kicks became strong and purposeful
🌊 He learned to relax on his back with support
🌊 He gained some independence moving with a noodle
🌊 Most importantly, he showed us that he absolutely can learn in the water when he's given the support and opportunity that work for him
I am so proud of everything Elliot accomplished! His first lessons with me weren't about expecting him to learn exactly like everyone else—they were about figuring out how Elliot learns and building from there.
Mom may have arrived on Day 1 prepared to get in the pool, but she got to spend these lessons watching her boy develop new skills instead. 🥹💙
I can't wait to see where another year of swimming takes Elliot! 🌊🏊‍♂️

🏊‍♂️💙 Aiden did something BIG this year! 💙🏊‍♂️
Aiden has been swimming with me for a few years, and every year we work at his pace. He has autism and has always had a strong fear of getting his head wet. He also hasn't been comfortable when his feet can't touch the bottom of the pool.

But this year… we made it to the deep end! 🙌
With the assistance of a noodle, Aiden kicked and pulled himself all the way across the pool independently—without me holding onto him!
Yes, he still needs his noodle, and that's perfectly okay. The noodle gave him the support he needed to feel safe enough to do something we've never been able to accomplish before.

For the first time in all our years together, we didn't just get close to the deep end—Aiden traveled across it himself. 🌊

Swimming progress doesn't look the same for every child. Sometimes the biggest accomplishment isn't swimming without support; it's having the bravery to go somewhere you were once too afraid to go.
And this year, Aiden was BRAVE. 💙

I am SO proud of this new skill and how far he's come! 🏊‍♂️🌊

🏊‍♀️💦 Wren finished lessons this week and we have a SWIMMER! 💦🏊‍♀️

Week one, Wren was pretty reluctant to put her face in the water, and her kicks were big and splashy without really moving her forward.

But by week two, things started clicking! 💙

🌊 Comfortable putting her eyes in the water
🌊 Relaxing her body for a front glide
🌊 Kicking independently on a noodle AND moving herself forward
🌊 Floating on her back with very little assistance
🌊 Becoming more confident and comfortable in the water

Once Wren learned to relax and work with the water instead of fighting against it, we started seeing those swimming skills come together!

She still has plenty to build on as she grows, but she now has the beginnings of purposeful swimming instead of just playing in the water—and that's a pretty big accomplishment for two weeks!

Way to go, Wren! 🏊‍♀️💙🌊

Ok y'all... I have some pretty big news. 💙

On September 12th at Walk on the Wild Side, I will officially take over as the new President of the Autism Society of Acadiana.

And honestly, that's still a little crazy to type. 😂

If you've known me for any amount of time, you know the special needs community has been a huge part of my life for YEARS. I've taught, volunteered, advocated, worked with families, taught kids to swim, answered questions, helped where I could, and somehow just kept finding myself pulled deeper and deeper into this community.

This isn't just another title for me. It's not a job I decided sounded fun.

This feels like a calling. Like a purpose.

A few years ago, I never in a million years would have imagined myself becoming President of the Autism Society. Life looked very different then. But it's funny how life works... sometimes a door closes that you thought you were supposed to walk through, and somewhere down the road you realize there was another one waiting for you the whole time.

And here we are. 🥹💙

I'm excited. I'm nervous. I have approximately 4,782 ideas already 😂 and I know there is a LOT of work ahead of me. But more than anything, I am incredibly honored that I get the opportunity to serve our families and help shape what comes next for the Autism Society of Acadiana.

So... I would really love for my people to be there for this one. ❤️

If you're my friend, my family, you've worked alongside me over the years, cheered me on, listened to one of my 900 ideas, or you've just been part of this crazy journey somewhere along the way — come to Walk on the Wild Side at Zoosiana on September 12th and celebrate this next chapter with me.

Because apparently we're doing this. 😂💙

And I can't wait to see where it goes.
