If you decide to try an activity this summer that involves water there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated are pretty obvious choices. However, if you are trying something for the first time it's always a good idea to take a lesson or get instruction before heading out on the water. If you are kayaking you want to know how to turn right and left. And, a life vest is never not a good idea. A change of clothes is also something to consider. Who wants to drive home wet??

Exercise in or on water is another option that many peeps love to do in the summer. Swimming always comes to mind but what about water aerobics classes, paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing? I think if there is ever a time to think outside the four walls of a fitness center it's the summer season. Get out there and try something new. An activity you never would have done in your 20s or 30s may strike a different chord after 50. Explore all kinds of activities, it's cross training at its finest!

According to the Outdoor Industry Association, 59.6 million people took a hike last year. That makes hiking the most popular outdoor activity in the U.S. It can boost your aerobic fitness, improve your sense of balance, build strong bones and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Here's a couple things to keep in mind: If you use a hiking app like All Trails make sure you can access map trails offline, wear the right shoes, take a backpack so you have snacks and water to keep your energy and hydration levels up, perhaps have hiking poles and bring layers of clothing so you are always prepared for weather and elevation changes. Happy trails, Wise Goddess!

After 50 many women think they are too old to begin a new hobby or physical endeavor. I say it's the perfect time to get started. I began hiking after 50 and it has become my favorite physical activity. You can do it solo or find a group. There are hiking trails to fit every fitness level and being in nature is stress reducing. Get started by taking walks in your area - your neighborhood, forest preserves or state parks. See how you feel after a few months of building your stamina to 2-5 mile hikes communing with nature. I'm betting that hiking becomes one of the best things you do each week..You may just find yourself planning a hiking vacation and getting hooked on challenging your mind, body and spirit to a grand adventure!

If you took my advice from Monday's post and took a spin on your bike I hope you did a few stretches after your ride. It's a good idea to stretch your hamstrings (area behind your thighs) your thigh muscles and your b***y. But, people often forget their calves and ankles. So, try and get one 30 second stretch for each lower body muscle group after you hop off your bike. Below are a few stretching options. Downdog is a great stretch for the whole back body and if you alternate heel drops the calves get lengthened too!

There are lots of ways to get some exercise outside the typical fitness center. What about a bike ride? You probably rode your bike everywhere when you were young. Why did you quit? Biking is great for your lower body and can be a cardio activity if you go fast enough or bike uphill. Research has shown peeps who ride a bike on a regular basis have healthier knees. If all it took was a daily bike ride to avoid knee replacement would you do it, Wise Goddess? My answer is a resounding YES!!!

Tired of hearing about drinking more water? Fair enough...but if you are experiencing summer fun in the great outdoors you need to be hydrating on a regular basis.
Besides filling your Yeti with water there's a plethora of water-packed foods to take advantage of during the summer season. Whether you grow your own, head to a local farmer's market or shop at your favorite grocery store you can stock up on fruits and veggies that are easy to eat on the go or add to a sit down meal. Some great examples include all melon varieties, summer squash, cucumbers, all lettuce varieties, peaches, strawberries and bell peppers. And, you can always add citrus fruits or herbs such as mint or lemon balm to your glasses of water to make them more interesting!

Chances are you are getting outdoors more often now that warmer weather is here. Do you have a nontoxic sunscreen? Avoid these 6 ingredients when picking a product: 1) Oxybenzone 2) Octinoxate 3) Retinol Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate) 4) Homosalate 5) Octocrylene and 6) Paraben Preservatives.

Make sure your sunscreen is labeled "broad spectrum" and a SPF of 50 is a safe bet. My dermatologist recommends a mineral based sunscreen, less chemicals, and that's what I wear DAILY. It won't do you any good if it sits on a shelf, Wise Goddess. Sun damage will age your skin fast and you don't want that do you?

The last post celebrating Mental Health month is a combo pose and breathing technique.
Begin in easy seat on a mat, possibly with a rolled blanket under your hips, or sit in a chair. From here let's practice a variation of alternate nostril breathing, which can provide immediate physiological and mental relief.
Close your right nostril with your thumb and take a slow breath in through your left nostril. Close your left nostril with your ring finger as you release your thumb and breathe out through your right nostril. Keeping the left nostril closed inhale through the right then close the right nostril with the thumb as you release the left nostril. Keep alternating like this for a couple of minutes. Over time you can extend this breath work to 5-10 minutes.
After you finish alternate nostril breath take the second pose pictured for up to 30 seconds, then the last pose to each side for up to 30 seconds each.

Here is a meditation that can help alleviate stress and anxiety while also allowing you to understand where you hold tension in your body. If you are someone who has trouble falling asleep you may want to practice this as you get into bed. You may just find you get through a few body areas and next thing you know it's morning!
