In Edo-period literature, Musashi Gorō Sadayo was the 16-year-old son of Prince Okiyo and a legendary warrior under Taira no Masakado. At the Battle of Karashima, he famously deflected a storm of arrows while holding the front line, becoming a symbol of youthful courage, loyalty, and martial skill.

Ukiyo-e art is by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, famous for his dynamic warrior prints (musha-e).

Two styles. Two Blades. One workshop.

For a few years in the mid-to-late 1980s, I trained in Renaissance swordplay. It was a fascinating and very different experience from the Japanese sword work I was practicing regularly.

Years later, in the mid-1990s, I brought the two traditions together for a special workshop for members of the dojo. We studied and practiced both Renaissance and Japanese swordplay - exploring their different approaches to movement, distance, timing, and technique.

And then we put the training to the test in live cutting.

Targets were set up, and we cut using both types of sword blades. No theory or speculation. Just technique, timing, and the reality of the sword. Different swords. Different methods. The same challenge - Learn, Practice, and Evolve.

A flowing sequence of movement, connecting one technique naturally into the next: Kuzushi (崩し) → Keri Age (蹴上げ) → Osoto Nage (大外投げ) → Ude Gyaku (腕逆) → Temakura (手枕) → Ude Ori (腕折) → Gyaku Zeoi (逆背負い) → Onikudaki (鬼砕) → Ashi Barai (足払) → Juji Gatame (十字固め).

The techniques are distinct, but the movement is continuous - one opportunity creating the next.

This is NOT a kata (form) but more of a simple drill.

According to folklore, Jiraiya is the orphaned son of a fallen castle lord, raised by bandits in lawless Echigo. He later learns magical toad arts from the toad sage Senso Dojin, who teaches him to protect the poor. Jiraiya and his wife Tsunade eventually defeat the serpent-linked robber Orochimaru and rescue Princess Tagoto.

In the Seven Samurai, the outcome of the duel between Kyuzo and the other samurai is decided before either samurai make their first move. We see this in their posture, sword grip, composure, and focus. These tell us who the superior swordsman is.
The boastful samurai's attack only reinforces that assessment.
And regardless of what we as the audience think, the film maker (Akira Kurosawa) tells us his truth. He makes this clear through the conversation between Kambei Shimada (leader) and Katsushirō Okamoto (young samurai) while the events are unfolding. Kambei recognizes Kyuzo won the first exchange and explains why, while Katsushirō initially believes it was a draw.

In the 1980s, patches were a big part of martial arts culture. The annual Shadows of Iga Ninja Festival had a different-colored patch each year. There was also a cool SOI members patch that we proudly placed on our military-style training outfits.
Then there were the local dojo (school) and shibu (chapter) patches, like this one designed by Kelly Hill (RIP) that he issued to group members around 1984. Both John Lindsey and Robert Higginbotham were founding members.
