Victory! The Yarmouth 11U Baseball All Stars defeated South Portland 8-5 on Thursday at Peterson Field Sports Complex.
Yarmouth jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after RJ Pemberton led off with a single, was moved over with a bunt by Paxton Ryan, and ultimately came around to score on a passed ball. The rally continued in the first with Moses Lee drawing a walk, and Theo Woodbury singling, scoring Lee. Yarmouth got a third and fourth run a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Yarmouth added to their early lead in the top of the third inning when Landon Lessard singled, scoring two runs, and a wild pitch scored one run.
South Portland, though, would roar back to life to make it a game, scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. The rally could have continued, but Yarmouth went to the bullpen and called in ace stopper Landon Lessard who recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Lessard then continued pitching in the bottom of the 6th, trying to hold Yarmouth's three run lead. He struck out three straight batters (making a total four strikeouts in a row) to wrap up the game and record the save.
Theo Woodbury started on the hill for Yarmouth. The pitcher gave up four hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out eight and walking two.
Lessard provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Yarmouth with two runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Moses Lee and Rowan Codey each collected two hits of their own. Drew Fischer stole two bases.
Yarmouth plays Tri-Town on Saturday for their next game.
