~When you train Karate well, it will arrive without thought~

We have a teenage student who has been training with us for about a year. At school, someone tried to hit them in the head multiple times with a closed umbrella. They deflected a all of the strikes with ease and got out of the way. As I was told, that seemed to take the wind out of the bully's sails.

What shocked this student was that they didn't even think about what moves they were doing - instinct took over and kept them safe. While going over this encounter with them, it was fun for us both to realize that the defensive movements they used were exactly like what we had practiced in Kata and partnerwork.

Now to be clear, we've never practiced "umbrella defense" at the dojo. The great news? We didn't need to. Understanding principles and diligent training kept this student safe from harm.

Hi everyone! Testing is right around the corner. A few items of housekeeping:

-Please have May tuition & test registration fee paid by the end of this week to be eligible to test.

-Next test cycle, for all blue belts and above we will begin requiring sparring gear. Padded helmet, gloves, feet covers, and mouth guard for everyone, and groin protectors for the gentlemen. We have some surplus gear we will sell at a discount, it should be in stock at the dojo next week.

-If you'd like extra training time, you are welcome to come to extra classes at no cost. This also includes Saturday's open mat from 9:30-10:30. With everyone getting ready to test, the floor has been a little crowded at times (especially when we independently practice kata).

-If you'd like specialized one-on-one training with me or Sensei Becca, reach out and we can schedule private instruction. $25 for one hour or $45 for two hours - these can be back-to-back or split across the week, whatever works best for your schedule!

See you all on the mats!

This was a fun kicking drill from our 6:15 youth class on Tuesday. Trying to kick a moving target out of the air is much more difficult (and fun!) than kicking something stationary.

New session starts in June! If you're interested in signing up, message us on Facebook or email us at [email protected].
