Northern bobwhite quail once were plentiful throughout Delaware’s fields and grasslands as part of a thriving population of millions across the country. But habitat loss, development and changing land management practices caused populations to plummet over the last several decades.
Now, thanks to years of habitat restoration work by DNREC and partners, quail are making a comeback along the Delaware Bayshore.
At Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area, the population has grown from just a few dozen birds to nearly 800 through prescribed fire, native plant restoration and careful habitat management that benefits countless other wildlife species too.
