👀 **I LOVE these “AHA!” moments with my students.** CROSS EYE DOMINANCE

This was one of those moments that made everything click for my student: He's cross eye dominant.

Something as simple as understanding **which eye is dominant** can explain why certain things have been difficult during training. Once you understand what your brain and eyes are naturally doing, you can start working *with* your body instead of fighting it.

🎯 Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs don't come from trying harder—they come from understanding the fundamentals and working with an instructor who understands adaptive shooters: people who require adaptations in equipment or technique.

That moment when a student finally says, **“Ohhh, NOW I get it!”** — that's why I love teaching.

At Shot Tec, our first training session covers a lot more than simply learning how to pull the trigger.

We teach the **4 Rules of Firearm Safety**, **2 Rules of Safe Storage**, and the **7 Fundamentals of Handgun Marksmanship**.

But while we're teaching something as basic as **breath control**, we're also sneaking in another important skill: **verbal commands.**

Many people discover during training that when they concentrate on shooting, they unintentionally hold their breath.

That's not ideal—especially under stress.

The effects of holding your breath can be eerily similar to some of the physical effects associated with fight-or-flight. When your body is already dealing with stress, we don't want you accidentally making things worse by forgetting to breathe.

So here's a simple secret:

**If you're talking, you're breathing.**

And in a defensive encounter, what should you be saying?

**Verbal commands.**

Incorporating verbal commands into our training can accomplish several things:

🗣️ It helps identify who is acting as the defender.
🫁 It encourages breathing instead of holding your breath.
🧠 It helps you stay mentally engaged and functional under pressure.
👥 It communicates clearly to people around you and potential witnesses.
🛑 And ideally, it may help achieve compliance and stop the confrontation before things escalate further.

At Shot Tec, we teach marksmanship—but we also teach our students to **think, communicate, and stay functional under pressure.**

In this video, we break down the four basic components of a cartridge:

But there’s something else happening in this video that I think is worth sharing.

🎥 **Our camerawoman is a 70-year-old Shot Tec client.**

She wanted to record a recap of the loading and unloading process so she could rewatch it later. She gave us permission to share the footage, so we thought we'd show you how we approach training.

At Shot Tec, we encourage our students to **film their training sessions** if it helps them learn.

We automatically email session notes after every session, but written notes aren't the best learning tool for everyone. Some people learn better by watching a demonstration again, asking us to demonstrate something another way, or simply reviewing the process at their own pace.

That's why we're happy to accommodate different learning styles.

Our goal isn't just to demonstrate something once. We want our students to **understand what they're doing, remember it, and become more knowledgeable and responsible firearm owners.**

🔧 **This G***k 19 was SEIZED UP by corrosion.**

A customer brought this G***k 19 to us for cleaning after corrosion had essentially formed a **rust weld between the tip of the barrel and the slide**. The firearm was so seized that the slide could not initially be locked to the rear for a normal chamber inspection.

As we've shown in previous videos, when a firearm cannot be manipulated normally, **safety and verification come first**. This video shows part of the process involved in safely addressing an unusual situation like this.

**This G***k 19 was so seized up from dirt and buildup that we couldn’t lock the slide to the rear to inspect the chamber. 😳**

And that means you **slow down**.

Before attempting to force anything, I used an old trick commonly associated with muzzleloaders: using a rod—in this case, a pen—to check the distance down the barrel and help determine whether there appeared to be something occupying the chamber.

Because when you cannot visually inspect the chamber, **you don't make assumptions.**

All **Four Rules of Responsible Fi****ms Handling** still apply while dealing with an assembled firearm—even when that firearm isn't functioning normally.

If there were a cartridge in the chamber, forcing a seized firearm open without first considering its condition could create additional hazards. The goal is to avoid a chain of bad assumptions and actions.

**Slow down. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction. Keep your finger off the trigger. Treat the firearm with the respect that its unknown condition demands.**

This is also why we believe strongly in educating gun owners about routine maintenance.

At Shot Tec, we believe firearm training should adapt to the student—not force the student to adapt to a one-size-fits-all technique. 💪

Our 70-year-old client, who is also behind the camera for this video 🎥, is an adaptive shooter. Because of low muscle tone and arthritis, some fine motor tasks can be challenging—including locking the slide to the rear on her new SIG Sauer P365 XL Rose Edition to unload and show clear.

So, we made adaptations.

We set her up with a guide rod and spring that makes the slide easier for her to rack, and during training we worked on the **“empty magazine method.”** Instead of relying on the slide lock lever, this technique allows her to use an empty magazine as part of her unloading and clearing process—working with movements and techniques that are more manageable for her.

Every student is different. Age, strength, mobility, arthritis, coordination, and other physical factors can all affect how someone interacts with their equipment. Our job as instructors is to find safe, practical solutions that work for the individual student.

We also send session notes to our clients after every session. In this case, our client wanted her notes filmed so she could review the techniques later—and we were happy to make that happen.

The easiest way to remember the 4 Rules of Responsible Fi****ms Handling? Think about movie Rust and Alec Baldwin.

In this excerpt from a one-on-one Shot Tec fi****ms training session, we discuss the tragic shooting on the set of *Rust* involving Alec Baldwin.

The lesson is simple: **the safety rules are layered.**

The commonly taught four rules are designed to work together. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Never point it at something you are not willing to destroy. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

When responsible fi****ms handling breaks down, changing even **one critical decision** can prevent a tragedy. That is why we don't treat these rules as suggestions or pick and choose which ones to follow.

**Follow all four. Every time.**

Before I travel with a firearm, I check **four categories of resources** to make sure I understand the laws that may apply along the way:

**1️⃣ Industry guides** — Resources from organizations such as USCCA, NRA-ILA, and Right To Bear can help give you a starting point and point you toward the laws you need to understand.

**2️⃣ Government resources** — When it comes to the actual law, I look for official state resources, including Attorney General, State Police, and other websites ending in **.gov**.

**3️⃣ Legal blogs from Second Amendment attorneys** — Attorneys who actively work in fi****ms law can provide valuable explanations and analysis of complicated statutes and recent legal developments.

**4️⃣ Local grassroots Second Amendment organizations** — Every state has organizations that stay closely involved with local fi****ms laws and politics. Here in Pennsylvania, for example, FOAC is an important resource to know.

But there is one source I **don't** rely on:

❌ *“My buddy told me…”*
❌ *“My neighbor says…”*
❌ *“Someone at the gun shop told me…”*

When you're traveling with a firearm, bad information can have very real consequences. Advice that sounds confident in a conversation isn't necessarily accurate—and **“someone told me it was legal” is not a legal defense.**

Do your own research. Check reliable sources. Verify the current law. And when you need legal advice about your specific situation, speak with a qualified attorney.
