I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to coach both groups of kids this season. All summer, I wondered if my health would permit me to return to the gym and guide our young athletes. I am incredibly thankful to all the players, parents, staff, administration, and our community for the unwavering love and support you have shown our teams.
Being immersed in the world of kids and basketball has been immensely beneficial for me over the past four months. I understand that at times, my expectations and demands of our players may seem high. However, I firmly believe that accountability is one of the most genuine expressions of love and if we do not expect great things then great accomplishments can't be achieved. I acknowledge that some may disagree with this approach, and that is perfectly understandable – it's an inherent part of coaching. Please know that I deeply care for all our players and wholeheartedly desire the best for each of them. With such a talented roster, it's challenging to provide every player with the desired amount of playing time, but that's a fortunate predicament for a coach. I challenge our players to work on their game in the offseason and continue to grow individually.
The accomplishment I am most proud of this season is not the championships we won. Rather, it is the development of winning habits and characteristics within our players: taking ownership and initiating practices, clearing the benches after games, holding each other accountable, and teaching each other on and off the court. Perhaps most importantly, I cherish the genuine joy they exhibit for each other's successes. These are the true reasons we engage in sports.
For our players who will be moving on to become Eagles, I hope I have prepared you to be successful both individually and to contribute to our high school's success, bringing home district and regional championships. Our goal has always been to improve, win now, and simultaneously prepare you for the next level.
Thank you again to everyone. I will be posting further announcements shortly regarding a banquet and the opportunity for our 5th and 6th-grade team to continue playing for the next few weeks.
Go Pirates!
