KarMik Acres

KarMik Acres KarMik Acres is dedicated to the study of fine horsemanship and hosts high caliber clinics for all. Join us as a rider participant or as an auditor/spectator.

KarMik Acres facility hosts Midwest horsemanship clinics May through early November. Our mission is to bring outstanding professional talent to the Midwest and allow local horsemen and women the opportunity to experience and learn from them, either riding or spectating. Our clinics are limited to a maximum of 10 riders to allow individual attention. While it can benefit your horse to be exposed to

large groups, we find the best learning environment is smaller groups. Both are excellent ways to learn. It's a great way to meet new, like-minded people and have some fun too. Our clinicians always put the horse first. You will not find any quick fixes or gimmicks here. We are also the best resource for Working Equitation clinics, practice sessions and learning in the Midwest. We are Affiliate members of the newly formed USA Working Equitation group. Contact us: www.KarMikAcres.com to find out our list of clinicians. We look forward to meeting you!

Horses arriving for the spring WE camp. This is our favorite “trailer” from the farm down the street. We had a full house with lots of great horse/rider pairs. Thanks to all those that let us share our knowledge and passion for the sport of Working Equitation.

A huge thank you to Reta Conner for a great weekend of lessons. Her expertise and knowledge are second to none. Doesn't matter if we're working on Dressage, Working Equitation, foundation or LOL even trick training.

Thank you Reta for your patience and amazing ability to help us fill in our holes.

Kyle's Sister (Miss P) is really starting to think her way through situations and loves the obstacle challenges. She has started to do some of the obstacles at liberty and totally on her own (bridge).

If you want to help support the Retired Racehorse Project, Miss P and I would truly appreciate it. Anything you can spare will help this great mission of helping find 2nd careers for OTTBs. Every dollar counts.

Hey friends, 2026 is going to be exciting for us at KarMik Acres. In addition to our usual Working Equitation shows, clinics and lessons, Karen will be competing in the 2026 Retired Racehorse Project Make the Makeover competition in October at the Kentucky Horse Park.

As many of you know, we purchased a 3 year old OTTB last January 2025 to hopefully compete in the 2025 Makeover. Miss P wasn't ready physically or emotionally for 2025 so here we are in 2026 and we're going for it! I will be sharing our journey to the competition in October.

Miss P will be working toward competing in Working Equitation as her second career. We would love to see more OTTBs in the sport.

We are currently helping RRP (501c organization) to fund raise to help support their mission. Join us and please donate if you can. $5 helps towards our goal.

If there is one thing I’ve done throughout my career, it’s ride a lot of young horses.

When you spend that much time starting horses from the ground up, you start to realize that we often talk about "suppleness" as if it’s a gym goal, something to be achieved through more bending, more lunging, or more "work."

But with a young horse, stiffness isn't a physical problem. It’s a mental one.

Stiffness is the physical manifestation of doubt.

When a young horse is out of balance, they feel vulnerable. Their instinct is to brace, to lock their neck, hollow their back, and wear their muscles like internal armor. They are holding onto themselves because they don't yet trust that they can stay upright without that tension.

You cannot force a horse to be supple. You can only invite them to be balanced.

Suppleness is what happens the moment the horse feels secure enough to let go. It’s the "release" of the internal brace. As the rider, your job isn't to "bend" the horse into submission; it's to be so steady in your seat and so clear in your intent that the horse feels safe enough to let go.

This is the ultimate parallel in life and training:

★ Balance is the prerequisite for freedom. It is the rider being so predictable that the horse can find his own center.

★ Suppleness is the evidence of that freedom. It is the "release" of the muscles once the fear of falling is gone.

★ Trust is the bridge between the two.

Suppleness isn't something you create; it’s what’s left over when the horse finally feels secure enough to drop their internal armor and let the movement flow through them.

Next time you feel resistance under the saddle, don't ask "How do I make them bend?" Ask, "What am I doing that makes them feel like they need to hold on?"

Mastery isn't forcing the suppleness. It’s creating the safety that allows the suppleness to emerge.
