Hello Friends:
A quick update for you: I am moving my personal training service, Sweat Equity Training and Fitness to the Elite Health and Fitness facility on Shallowford Rd., just a west of Mabry Rd.

Elite is a boutique fitness and martial arts studio and its central location will afford me several new opportunities. Of course, I’ll continue doing personal training and weight loss, youth athletic development, strength, speed, agility and conditioning, but now offering specialized training for Parkinson Disease and Stroke Recovery.

Additionally, I am excited to add specialized self-defense training: Violence Dynamics. This is not a martial arts course or program, although it has some physical components, this is self-defense taught as a life skill! This course teaches how to be aware of, avoid, de-escalate, and finally, deal with and in violence.

Through this course, we can make you way smarter, way faster, than you can become competent in a martial art or physical defense system. Our program is called Fierce Girls and is designed for girls and women who want an efficient way to gain confidence and competence without investing years into a program. Fierce Girls is designed in modules, each one, more or less, stand alone so you can design your program for you, based on your schedule, your capabilities and your capacities.

So sad. We must do better, as coaches and parents. Sports are a tool, not the end goal. Better people, better lives are the goal.

Sharing an important message from Hull-Muncher:
"I have been hesitant about opening up about this tragic loss and talking about the most unspoken problem in an athlete’s world. When I say “our” or “we”, I am referring to every female athlete performing at the collegiate level - I can only speak for myself and other females as I can relate on all levels. (This can go for male sports too).
Our whole life, we have been molded to compete. With competing comes with comparison. Comparison comes with standards. Standards become unrealistic. Every single day is a battle. From performing in the classroom to stay eligible; To performing in our sport to win a starting spot. While also maintaining a social life and “balance”. You’re constantly reminded that you have a benchmark to ALWAYS meet. If you fall short, you’re treated differently… by sometimes yourself, your coaches, teammates, and even your own family. The amount of stress that we go through mentally and physically is unimaginable. Pressure is not the problem. Applied pressure for a long period time takes a toll on us mentally that we were never prepared for nor equipped for. But, if you show defeat or emotion, you’re weak or feel judged.
My freshman year, I was almost Katie. I wanted to take my life on multiple occasions. I have never felt more alone but yet surround by thousands of people on the daily. I know so many others that have a similar story. This has to stop. NCAA and administration need to do better on providing confidential resources to our female athletes. They also need to be better equipped to see our battles and recognize when they need to step in. Our mental state MATTERS. We are so much more than the number on our back and the entertainment we provide. If we can’t get administration to step up for us, we have have to lean on each other. Our parents and coaches play such a huge role in this as well.
No one is to blame, but we all can take steps to being advocates. Parents/Coaches, while your athlete is young… make it a priority to talk about this issue. Instead of your first words criticizing their performance, allows them to digest the moment and speak first. Allow your child to fail. Remind them to be consistent, not perfect. Install a boundary in your house that performance talk will stay in the vehicle. Treat them no different when they have a bad day. Tell them you’re proud of them and that you love them MORE. Give your kid a kind touch instead of daggers. Make your home a safe place. Have the conversation now, not later as it might be too late.
She is doing the best she can. She ALWAYS wants to perform well. She strives for you to be proud of her. She wants your approval constantly. She NEEDS you and all the others that she is surrounded by. Don’t let your daughter or player be the next Katie because we ignore the “weakness”.
I pray for all female athletes to know that their athletic performance does not dictate their worth. I pray that they know others love them unconditionally - athlete or not. Our God is so great that he gifted each and every single athlete to compete and have a platform that allows them to excel in life. I pray for this family and for their loss. I pray that you speak to your daughter or player with kindness and treat her with grace after a bad day. Sports are a gift. Sports are a game. Sport is not a murderer, the unrealistic standard that has been installed is."
