This was a video we shot last week in response to some questions about the butterfly guard and how to utilize sweeps from there. For me, as is most often the case, the techniques have to be built on a solid positional understanding, which is what we discuss here. The drilling progression we go thru is ideal for understanding, maintaining, and then using under pressure the butterfly guard.

For those training with us this week in the X Guard (we'll have a recap out at the end of the week) you can see how these open guards start to have similar overlap in skill set. This means that training and utilizing one will have an overlapping training effect in another. You'll also note how they all begin to chain together to become "open guard" rather than butterfly guard, x guard, ect.

Cool thing.

Patrick O'Keefe, the owner of KarateFourms.com just gave us a great shout out for our pending launch of Alpha BJJ on his site. For those that don't know, I hang out on his discussion board quite a bit and serve as a moderator for him on the site.

Absolutely AMAZING energy on the mats today! Great flow rolls working on our attacks in combination followed by some open mat! Everyone, thank you for the support and enthusiasm that you are showing for Alpha! There's an excitement on the mats that is beyond words. Fielding questions about it just gets us more fired up to start something special on January 1!

This week's recap is the mount work we did while focusing on Attacks by Combination in BJJ! Attacking fluidly in combination is one of the hallmarks of the advanced jiu jitsu practitioner. However, even at an entry level, this sort of training can provide invaluable training on positioning and body mechanics. It was a pleasure to teach and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
