Do you know what the difference is between a grade 1, 2, and 3 muscle tear?

A grade 1 tear is when the muscle fibers are stretched but don’t fully separate, while a grade 2 involves some separation of the tissue. A grade 3 is a complete rupture, which is much more serious and is more likely to require surgical repair.

Do you think every muscle tear requires surgery?

It really depends on how severe the tear is. Grade 1 and grade 2 tears rarely require surgery, while grade 3 tears are more likely to. Your goals also play a big role, especially if you’re a high-level athlete trying to return to competitive sport. With recovery taking several months to a year or more, it’s important to weigh your options and determine what makes the most sense for your goals.

Do you know the difference between a Grade 1, 2, and 3 muscle tear?

A Grade 1 tear is a pulling apart of the fibers, Grade 2 is where some fibers pull apart while others stay intact, and Grade 3 is a full separation or rupture. These different grades also take different amounts of time to return to sport, ranging from a few weeks to six months or more.

We had a great time talking all about throwing with !

What’s the most common injury we see in our physical therapy clinic?

We definitely see a lot of throwing injuries in the shoulder and elbow, most often associated with tendonitis in the biceps or forearm flexor tendon. A lot of these issues have to do with how much they're throwing, how they're throwing, and their warm-up process. Taking a closer look at those factors can be an important part of keeping throwers healthy.

Looking for a way to challenge your core stability?

Try body saw planks. They challenge your ability to maintain a strong, stable position while moving through the exercise. Focus on staying controlled and keeping your core engaged.

Strength training for runners shouldn't look like a powerlifting program. It should mirror what your body does on a long run. Single-leg, high-rep hip and glute work builds the endurance strength that actually holds up over miles.

09/09/2026

Why do runners need strong hips?

Your hips control your knee position. Weak glutes let the knee cave inward with every stride, and over thousands of reps that extra stress on the inside of the knee can lead to real problems, ones that are often preventable with the right strength work.

Think strength training will slow down your distance running?

Not if it's programmed right. Runners don't need explosive, low-rep lifts, they need higher rep ranges that build the endurance in their hips, adductors, and calves to hold up over miles.

Are you a distance runner who overlooks strength training?

Strength training should supplement your distance running, not take away from it. Twice a week, 20–30 minutes of focused strength training can help reduce injury risk and improve overall performance. Focus on the hips, quads, adductors, and calves to help your running.
