Push ups are extremely effective for both building upper body strength and training the scaps to move in rhythm with the humerus (arm bones).

Unfortunately though, they often get taken for granted as β€œsimple” and don’t get coached. Well executed push ups are some of the best β€œarm care” you can do!

How are your landmines?

Most folks know the landmine press to be an excellent driver of both upper body strength and as a great arm care tool.
-
Unfortunately though, they often get programmed but not coached up. It’s SUPER important to maintain a solid rib cage position and to cue the athlete to finish the rep with a subtle reach. These two go hand in hand!

1st Picture/Set Up- Common Bad Form:
● Excessive Extension at Lower Back
● Rib Cage Isn’t Stacked Over Pelvis - Limits Non Compensatory Rotation
● Will Limit Motion of Shoulder Blade into Protraction at Set Up - Shoulder IR
● Limits Use of Abs During Row to Help Support Rotation
2nd Picture/Rowing Action- Common Bad Form:
● Limited Trunk Rotation Through Row - Hinders Mechanical Work - Limits GAINZ
(Mechanical Work)
● Excessive Humeral Extension
● Limited Scapular Retraction - Limits Leverage of External Rotators
● Creates a Lat Dominant Row - Not Evil, but not always ideal for throwers (the Lat limits
motion overhead if it has too much leverage
3rd Picture/Set Up- Ideal Form:
● Limited Extension at Lower Back (Creates More Rotation at Thoracic Spine)
● Rib Cage Stacked Over Pelvis
● Allows for more Shoulder Blade Protraction at Set Up - Shoulder IR
● Greater Use of Abs During Row to Help Support Rotation
4th Picture/Rowing Action-Ideal Form:
● Trunk Rotation Through Row - Creates More Mechanical Work - Increases GAINZ
● Appropriate Humeral Extension
● Scapular Retraction - Increases Leverage of External Rotators
● Creates a Balanced Row - Scap Retraction/Humeral Extension at the Same Time
● Adding a Reach to the Opposite Arm Drives Rotation to the Rowing Side
