I love the conversation in the comments about "why" athletes. There's so much more to be considered than whether the athlete is being disrespectful -- culture and neurological wiring are just two.
My mantra is this: You can't build a great athlete on top of a broken human. If you're not reaching the human in each athlete you coach, you may be missing the point.
Just something I have observed (from my own kids). When you ask athletes to do something, some ask, “Why?” and others just say, “Okay.”
I try to explain the why as often as possible, but it’s nice to hear, “Okay,” and I think there is a competitive advantage to being able to just say okay and then get something done …
