Wildfires are becoming more common in Southern California – where horse riding is a popular pastime. So what happens to horses when disaster hits?

Wildfire season is here. There is a big fire in the Oroville area. Do you know what to do if you need to evacuate you and your animals in a hurry?

Here is some advice from the North Valley Animal Disaster Group to help you prepare for your pets:

- Take your pet with you: If you must evacuate, do not leave your pet behind. Roadblocks may prevent you from returning. If it isn't safe for you, it isn't safe for your pet.
- Friends and relatives: Make a list of people who could care for your pet if you lose your home.
- Boarding facilities and hotels: Identify boarding facilities within a 100-mile radius and nearby pet-friendly hotels.
- Local animal shelters: Ask if they have an evacuation plan for animals and if they can care for your pet during an emergency.
- Microchip your pet: For easy identification.
- Emergency contacts: Include an out-of-area emergency contact on your pet's ID tag.
- Go-bag for pets: Pack leashes, extra ID tags, water, food, bowls, medications, health records, and a photo of your pet. Keep a photo in your wallet as well.
- Portable carrier: Ensure it's large enough for your pet to stand and turn around.
- Animal first aid kit: Have one ready.
