As a concealed carry permit holder - what can we learn from this incident?
We need to understand how difficult the job of a traffic cop is. Any given stop can go to hell in a handbasket in an instant. This officer had maybe a second to draw and fire at a suspect who surprised him with an AR-15.
So with every traffic stop, I recommend the following:
1. Turn on the interior lights (if dark) immediately. This allows them to see your entire vehicle.
2. Roll Down your window and keep your hands visible on the steering wheel. Don't start digging around for stuff - this makes a cop very nervous.
3. When the officer asks for your driver's license and registration, I always hand my DL, CHP and registration to the officer. If you need to dig for registration, always tell the officer where and why you are digging. (Announcing your CHP is not required in Colorado, but cops will be more at ease because they know that CHP holders are the least likely threat to them).
4. Always be polite, professional and always comply, even if you think the officer is incorrect. Don't make a traffic stop your Waterloo. Take it up with a supervisor later.
