Bergen Bassmasters

Bergen Bassmasters The Bergen Bassmasters was formed in 1986 and has since grown into one of the most respected clubs. Bergen members enjoy numerous benefits from the club.

The Bergen Bassmasters was formed in 1986 and has since grown into one of the most respected bass fishing clubs in the state of New Jersey. The club was affiliated with the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) until 2006 when the NJ Bass Federation opted to re-align with TBF, The Bass Federation, partnered up with the FLW organization. Founded on many basic principles, the club strives to rei

nforce the beliefs that we were founded on along with those of the TBF organization. The club involves itself with more than just fishing, keeping up to date with youth and environmental issues as well. Beginning in 1989, the club has held fishing derbies for both the local Cub Scouts and also for the handicapped. The annual "Outing for the Disabled" has won both State and National awards and the club has been selected as the NJ Bass Federation's Chapter of the Year a total of nine times. We also support our troops c/o the USO and have managed multiple benefit tournaments for the troops c/o the USO. The Bergen Bassmasters is the largest Federation Chapter in New Jersey having 36 members and a waiting list for future members. Monthly meetings are held in Oradell on the third Thursday of each month except December. Club tournaments are held in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, fishing 7 qualifying events. The club sends its top finishers to the annual New Jersey Top Six Team Tournament. We also conduct numerous buddy tournaments, some open only to club members and observers but also conduct an Open Event Night Tournament each year for non-members. There are monthly meetings, an extensive website loaded with information that highlights club activities, tournament results, and other fishing related topics. Of course there are the regular club tournaments as well as casual buddy events and the 2-day weekend Classic which is sponsored by the club. The year wraps up with a Gala bash at the Awards Banquet where plaques are presented, a Chinese auction is held, funny stories are shared and a great time is had by all. The Bergen Bassmasters is more than just a fishing club. It is an organization where bass anglers can meet new friends, learn new techniques, be aware of environmental issues, and give something back to those less fortunate. The club epitomizes what being a Bass Federation Chapter is all about.

Bergen had its season opener yesterday.

Great weather on Tax Day for Bergen on Candlewood produced a big field with 16 boats and 25 anglers! Water temps were in the low fifties the air temp topped the 80 degree mark. A fairly calm south wind in the AM became a little stronger after 12 noon. All in all, a perfect weather day for bass fishing and the results were very good. Zack Modelski may have placed 5th, but his limit included the only two smallies over 5 pounds, and one of them was a 5.68 lunker that won our progressive 6 pound lunker pool (criteria - 6 lbs for largemouth and 5.5 pounds for smallies) and regular lunker pool. No doubt Zach will make the April 16th Bergen meeting to receive a very nice check! Although no one broke the 20 pound mark, Erik Ruckdeschel had a great day with 18.90 lbs. There were seven smallies over 4 pounds and two largemouths over 5 pounds with the biggest at 5.24 pounds c/o Doug Giachino. With Bergen’s Points event #1 in the books, next up is Lake Lillinonah for Sunday, May 17. On a side note, it was great to have Kris Lechman back in with Bergen and he will once again be producing the running AOY results. Also, even as an observer, it was good to see John Hart back in the saddle as he took the observer lunker with a nice 4.26 smallie.

Bergen Bassmasters 3rd Annual Cabin Fever Open, originally set for Candlewood Lake on 3/28, was held on 3/29/26 on Lake Lillinonah. Air temp at blast off was a freezing 21 degrees and the water temps were in the low 40’s. Basically it was feast or famine for the field of 27 BONE COLD anglers in 14 boats. There are always a few teams who can find those deep cold water smallies, and this was the case on March 29. Congratulations to the Top Finishers!

Club & Open results 10/25 and 10/26

Hello Everyone,
The Two Bergen Tournaments on the Hudson are now history and it seems that it was feast or famine on both days. Billy and I struggled on Saturday but put it together and almost took home the coveted Bob Murphy Championship Plaques on Sunday. For Bergen on Saturday, Andy Karcich wrapped up another Angler of the Year title and John Giordano, who is the 2025 NYTBF Co-Angler of the Year, also wrapped up the his Bergen Co-Angler of the Year finish! That’s quite an accomplishment TWO co-angler of the Year finishes for Johnny G!
For another tough tournament to close out the Bergen Year, Nice going for all the top anglers on the Hudson River out of Catskill NY.

Bergen’s Annual Bob Murphy Memorial Open Tournament, Sunday October 26, 2025 (27 boats)
Sponsored by Greene County Tourism, Keitech USA and the NYTBF
Like Saturday, the day started off chilly with the temp around 39-40 and turned into a nice Sunny Day with temps in the 50’s. Waters temps maintained a 58 degree average. We started off with a 5:30AM to 7AM registration where every participant received a Keitech USA product handout c/o Mike Czaplinski. Go Go Gomez sold 50/50 raffle tickets and the our last applicant, Jarrett Kuipers, just made it under the wire for boat #27. With many hefty bags weighed in, the overall fishing on Sunday seemed to be much better than on Saturday. Congratulations to all of or Top Finalists and I Thank all of our Bergen members who helped out at the Weigh-Station, especially John Ernest and Erik Ruckdeschel!

Greenwood Lake 9-27-25 Results

On a tough Greenwood Lake, only four Bergen angler’s managed to bag 5 bass limits and one weighed in a 4 pounder. Water temp averaged around 70 degrees and the wind was light. Warm sunny weather attracted early fall boat traffic at mid-day but for bass fishing, Bergen basically had the lake to themselves. It was just a tough day but the top anglers need to be commended for figuring out which patterns and tactics worked and which didn’t. Although Greenwood does not fish as well as it used to in its heyday, it still affords an opportunity to have a challenging tournaments in basically Bergen’s own backyard….so we will be there again.

Saratoga Lake Results

Our 9/6/25 Saratoga tournament of 2025 is now history and with 15 of 18 members limiting out, it may have been our best Saratoga event to date (re numbers of bass)! Largemouths outnumbered smallies by 77 to 6 and with the heaviest bass going 4.56, the progressive 6 pound lunker pool remains unclaimed. The weather, despite a lousy forecast, started off with cloudy skies, no rain and little or no wind. This lasted for half the day then a few heavy showers hit for around 1 1/2 hours (no overhead lightning), then the rain stopped for the tournament end and the weigh-on. All in all, great weather for fishing! Next up is Greenwood Lake out of DeFeo’s Marine. Jason must collect your Greenwood Lake vehicle information for DeFeo’s at the next Bergen meeting.

08/17/2025

Fishing at a usual smallmouth bass factory, Bergen conducted the 4th of 7 Point Tournaments on Saturday August 16 on the Mohawk River at Schoharie Crossing. With water temps above 85 degrees, the bass fishing success was well below normal with 5 skunks and only two limits. To make matters worse, the reduced water flow from the Mohawk dams were at summer minimums producing little current down river. All in all, just a perfect storm of poor fishing conditions. Guys who pre-fished, even our veteran top anglers, caught little or no bass. But as usual, someone always pulls a rabbit out of the hat for a nice bag of bass. This time it was our Bergen Rookie, John Turney (NYTBF VP) from Warwick NY who locked through to the west and boated four fat smallies at 10.45 pounds to take First Place! His bag was just around a half pound ahead of Erik Ruckdeschel’s 2nd Place limit of 9.93 pounds. And then both gents exceeded the next bag by 3 to 4 pounds. All 26 bass, except one, were released alive and it was no surprise that the only green fish of the of the day was boated by largemouth specialist Bill Vella. Our 2024 Angler of the Year, John Ernest, only caught one bass, but it was a 4.01 smallie for Lunker Money.

Hello Everyone,
Not sure why Bergen’s 2nd Chance Night Open entailed only 13 boats , but the weather was great, no rain, light wind and most everyone limited out. As usual, the big smallies dominated the best bags and a 19.84 bag didn’t even garnish a cash payout. Congrats to the Top Finishers and Thank You to everyone who participated in our 2025 2nd Chance Night Open! This completes two Candlewood Night Opens and one Night Point tournament for the Bergen Bassmasters, who will be celebrating their 40th Club Anniversary in 2026.

Results: NYTBF Points and Annual Dick Garlock Team Open.
For Saturday July 26, the final NYTBF 2025 Point Tournament was held out of Cape Vincent on the St. Lawrence River. This event entailed the blocking of all Front Facing Sonar units on all boats. Even without said devices, traditional fish finding tactics resulted in some good weights. The weather was great with water temps hovering around 77 degrees. At the junction of Lake Ontario and the River, the winds were calm enough for either Lake Ontario or 1,000 Islands bass fishing. Nice going to the winners, Brad Brodnicki (Boater) and Kenny Walters (Co-Angler). As this was the last of 4 Points Tournaments of the year (drop one), Congrats to unofficial Anglers of the Year Brad Brodnicki (Boater) and John Giordano (Co-Angler)! While the AOY points are being confirmed by the NYTBF Vice President John Turney, we also need to determine who is qualified to enter the September Semi-Final hosted by the Ontario TBF at the Bay of Quinte. For the 4th and last Point Tournament of 2025, Congratulations to the Top Five finalists! Anglers just missing a cash payout received a quality rod from the NYTBF c/o Tom Luciano or a tackle bag c/o Brian Squires (Money Maker Jigs).

Hello Bergen Members,
Our annual Night Point tournament was held Saturday into Sunday and there were no major issues or problems that I know of. 56 bass were weighed at 207.46 pounds and 5 were DOA. I used Ice and lowered the livewell temp from 84 degrees to around 75 and after midnight, I kept the recirculation pump on until the weigh-in. I did not use any chemicals and all of our bass were released alive. With a 5.91 largemouth, Bergen’s $ lucrative 6 pound progressive pool was nearly broken by Bill Vella! TD Jason, with help from Kirk and Johnny G did a great job and our 3rd and last Night Tournament of the year, is set for August 2. This would be the “2nd Chance Night Open” and please let me know if you are fishing it? As usual, I will be there at 6PM to start registrations, and can use some help.
Congrats to all the Top Finishers and to Everyone who loves bass fishing at night!
