I want to talk about something I've seen first hand β€” and something I think a lot of trainers are completely overlooking. πŸ‘‡

If you are taking a GLP-1 medication β€” Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or similar β€” and you are NOT doing regular strength training, you may be losing muscle just as fast as you're losing fat. And that is a problem.

Here's the reality: GLP-1s are powerful tools for weight loss. But the scale going down doesn't tell you what you're losing. Studies show that without resistance training, a significant portion of the weight lost on these medications comes from muscle mass β€” not just fat. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, less strength, higher risk of injury, and a much harder time keeping the weight off long-term.

This is where I come in. My job β€” when working with clients on GLP-1s β€” is to make sure that as your body changes, it's getting stronger, not just smaller. We protect and build your muscle while the medication does its job on the fat. The two work together beautifully when they're paired intentionally.

I'm just going to say it directly because I think people need to hear it: if you are over 40 and you are not lifting weights, you are losing muscle. Right now. Every single year. 🧑

It's called sarcopenia β€” the natural loss of muscle mass that starts in your 30s and accelerates as you age. After 40, most people lose 1–2% of their muscle every year without resistance training. By 60 or 70, that loss shows up as weakness, balance problems, slower metabolism, fatigue, and a much higher risk of injury.

I'm not saying this to scare you. I'm saying it because it is completely reversible. And honestly? It's one of the most exciting things I get to do as a trainer β€” watch someone in their 50s, 60s, even 70s get stronger than they've been in decades.

Linda came to me at 65. Four years later, her bone density improved and she has more energy than she did before she started. Melinda told me she's stronger and fitter than she's been since college. My doctor said my bone density test was similar to someone 30 years younger!
