🌲🤎 Why Is the Wisconsin River Brown? 🤎🌲

One of the questions we hear every summer is, “Why is the water in the Wisconsin River brown?”

The answer might surprise you—it’s actually a natural part of the river’s ecosystem!

As water flows through forests, wetlands, and marshes upstream, it passes over fallen leaves, pine needles, bark, and other organic material. These materials release natural compounds called tannins into the water, much like a tea bag colors a cup of tea. The tannins give the Wisconsin River—and many of the lakes, bays, and backwaters connected to it—that familiar brown or tea-colored appearance.

🌳 The color comes from nature, not pollution.
🍂 It’s created by the same trees and plant life that make Wisconsin so beautiful.
🐟 Fish, wildlife, and aquatic plants have thrived in these waters for generations.

In fact, after a heavy rain, you may notice the water becomes even darker as more tannins are washed into the river system from surrounding forests and wetlands.

☀️ Around here, the job doesn’t stop when the boats are parked. Our boat rental crew has been putting in the work behind the scenes to keep improving the rental area and surrounding property for all of our guests!

From freshening up the playground area to making the whole space cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable, these boys have been working hard in the heat to make Holiday Shores even better for summer. 💪🌊
