Ice Cream Petanque Sept 5th Miller Park in Winston-Salem.
Had an excellent tournament Saturday. We had 24 teams with 52 people playing over the course of the day. And what a wonderful groups of folks from the local area as well as from out of state. Here are our "petanque cousins" Saturday:

Congratulations to the Concours Champions Juan Hernandez and Heidi Davison who took 1st place in a hard fought game against 2nd Place Jim Clapper, James Clapper, and Sebastian Paccione. They took home cash, ice cream bowls and medals in a 13-12 match.

Third place was Max Sewell, Edward Gildea and Steve Gantt
20260905_175401.jpg
Winners in Concours B
1st Dan Dolan- Mourhite Louali
2nd Frank Bocce- Janet Torrico
3rd Manny Fargeon – Patrick (I have no idea last name)

Winners Consolante
1st Chris Paccione- Doug Boes
2nd Rodney Plachy - Jesse Israel
3rd Seth Kennedy- Mike Owens

The day would not have been possible without the support and help of a lot of folks in our the Carolina Petanque group...
Rodney making the ice cream bowls, Mike 3d printing medallions, Barb and Rom donating the ice cream and all those toppings (serving it with Barb also assisting at the scoring table), Gary handling Head Umpire chores and running the Swiss Hotel spreadsheet, Chris planning and cooking lunch, Kathy and Marc driving down from Hickory just to help wherever needed (Kathy for the online support also), and last, but not least, Shirley getting snacks and doing player matchmaking. Many others made my day by throwing in to help. From raking the courts to setting up tents & gear. End of the day was the same. Having such a great crew giving back to the group is fantastic.

Plenty of pictures

Gary has put up some great people pictures from the tournament on the Carolina Petanque Blog: https://carolina-petanque.blogspot.com/2026/09/952026-petanque-ice-cream-social.html

I was asked again about the link to purchase T Shirts supporting MeetUp. Here it is one last time: https://camel-city-petanque-gear.printify.me/collection/ice-cream-petanque-open-tournament-2026-gear

Hope to see you at the next tournament and thank you for joining us Saturday,

Petanque heavy weekend in Winston-Salem. Open play Friday 5pm & Sunday 1pm. Ice Cream Petanque Tournament Saturday starting 8:30 am

Maybe we should change the name to "Petanque Day Weekend" from "Labor Day Weekend". There will be a whole lotta petanque going on in Miller Park over the next few days. I am going to use this email for double duty. As our normal weekly email (to local group, Facebook & MeetUp folks) and as the tournament email (so it will be sent to all tournament players too). The tournament info will be at the bottom.

Regular Petaqnue Play
Courts will be set up with rings and pegs by 5 pm Friday. Ive been informed some of the out of town tournament players will be joining us Friday to practice a bit. The court are always open for any early arrivers though the equipment may not be out. I may be restringing the courts a little between 4 pm and 5 pm by the way. There will still be plenty of courts available. Anyone can play... regular players, new players, and tournament players. Come on out.

Jumping ahead to Sunday, normal play starts at 1 pm. Everyone is welcome. There are extra boules and the more the merrier. Games start about every hour between 1 and 4 pm. We usually go eat afterward. Last Sunday had a big crew go out to Applebees. New folks and MeetUp members please join us. Walk right up and say hello even if we are already playing a game.

Also... its another forecasted hot weekend. Bring plenty of water, your favorite beverage, sunscreen, a cooling towel, a hat, and anything else that will help you stay comfortable during the day. Being prepared for the heat can make the difference between a long day and a really enjoyable day of pétanque.

Ice Cream Petanque Tournament

For a short notice tournament, I am pleasantly surprised, We have 24 teams and its looking like 52 to 53 players. Outstanding! Non-players are absolutely welcome to come out and watch! If you are local and have never been to a pétanque tournament before, this is a great opportunity to see how a tournament works, watch some good pétanque, and get a feel for what tournament play is all about. Come out, watch the games, meet the players, and enjoy the atmosphere. And because this is the Ice Cream Pétanque Open, spectators are welcome to enjoy some ice cream with us at lunch too — FREE!

Details for Saturday's Tournament

Date: Saturday, September 5, 2026
Location: Miller Park
2500 Queen St.
Winston-Salem, NC

Google Maps:https://share.google/Ah8abwcxM6wdMWpO5

SCHEDULE Saturday Sept. 5th

8:30 AM — Check-in deadline. Make sure to sign in and draw your team number. If a member of your team is not a FPUSA member, then they will need to sign the waiver at check in.

8:40 AM — Announcements and group picture

9:00 AM — First game begins

Morning games will be 60 minutes with no plus one. Single elimination games will be timed except the finals games will be untimed. The Swiss Hotel system will be used for qualifying. I will be attempting to start a new game every 75 minutes. Please hit the bathrooms, hydrate, and be ready for the following game soon after the previous one ends. We will be using our normal 8 courts and also the 4 bocce courts nearest to the bathroom. The bocce courts will be numbered 9 nearest the bathroom then,10, 11, and court 12 going toward the road away from the bathroom. There will be a number of folks for whom this will be their first tournament. This is a social tournament and a great time to show and teach them tournament rules and etiquette. Please help them get a foot up and become regulars tournament participants with us in the future.

TIE-BREAKER

If a game is tied at the end of the 60-minute time limit, the winner will be determined by a sudden-death toss. An official will set the pig approximately 7 to 9 meters away. Each team will toss one boule, and the team whose boule finishes closest to the pig wins.

LUNCH

Lunch will be after game 3 completes. Hoping to start lunch approximately 12:30 PM. Grilled lunch will be served to those who picked the option. Free ice cream will be available during lunch for everyone. Including spectators. I am planning on an hour lunch but if you are leaving the park to get food then ask me directly the start time. I will not be able to set the Single elimination games start time until all the third round games are finished. Remember to bring your beverage of choice for lunch too.

AFTERNOON PLAY

After lunch, we will begin the single-elimination portion of the tournament.

With 24 teams, we will have three brackets: Concours, Concours B, and Consolante. The 24-teams means no byes.

PRIZES

There will be medals for first, second, and third places in each of the three brackets.
The first-, second-, and third-place teams in the Concours (Championship bracket) will also receive handmade ice cream bowls created by Rodney Plachy. Our own Asheville Potter.

Additionally, the Concours will have a cash prize for the First Place Concours: $160 for the team and the Second Place Concours: $60 for the team

With prizes going to the top three teams in all three brackets, approximately one-third of the teams will go home with a prize.

COME PREPARED FOR A SUMMER DAY

Again, I can not say it enough, remember that it is still summer in North Carolina, and tournament day could be a long day outside. Plenty of water, your favorite beverage, sunscreen, a cooling towel, a hat, and anything else that will help you stay comfortable during the day. Being prepared for the heat can make the difference between a long day and a really enjoyable day of pétanque.

Camel City Pétanque News: Indoor Play Returns + Ice Cream Tournament Update

Hello Pétanque Friends!

☀️ Last Weekend Was a Good One!

We had some beautifully cooler temperatures last weekend, making for some especially enjoyable pétanque! Friday and Saturday brought plenty of fun, with lots of great games and good competition on the courts.

After Sunday’s play, a group of us kept the fun going with dinner at Texas Roadhouse. It’s always great when pétanque turns into an afternoon of playing, laughing, eating, and spending time together.

And a special THANK YOU to Gail and Eva! We really appreciate your regular help with setting up the courts and getting everything ready for everyone to play. Your help makes a difference!

Camel City Pétanque News: This Weekend + Ice Cream Pétanque Up Coming!
https://www.facebook.com/share/19Rf7ZbyHB/
Last Sunday was another great afternoon of pétanque at Miller Park, and it was especially nice to welcome back a couple
of familiar faces we haven't seen in a while — Tom and Fabian! It was great having you both back on the courts.

We had a beautiful afternoon of playing before the rain finally caught up with us late in the day. Rather than let the weather stop the fun, about 16 of us headed over to Mayberry's Restaurant early. We had the meeting room reserved, so after dinner we broke out the cards and dominoes and kept the good times going.

We're going to try making card and board games a regular monthly activity. After all, there's more to life than just pétanque! 😄 It's another chance to spend time together, meet people, and enjoy the Camel City Pétanque community even when we're not throwing boules.

🎯 PÉTANQUE THIS WEEKEND
We're back at Miller Park this weekend!

Friday at 5 PM
Sunday at 1 PM
📍 Miller Park Pétanque Courts — Winston-Salem

The weather looks like it may finally be breaking a little, with slightly cooler temperatures expected. So here's your challenge:

Come out and play!

If you've been playing with us but haven't made it out lately, this is a great weekend to come back. If you've heard about Camel City Pétanque but have never tried it, this is your invitation.

It's FREE to play, and we have plenty of extra boules (balls) for anyone who walks up and wants to give pétanque a try. No experience is necessary — we'll show you how to play.

Bring a friend, bring your curiosity, and come see what all the fun is about!

🍦 ICE CREAM PÉTANQUE 2026 — SEPTEMBER 5
Don't forget about our Ice Cream Pétanque 2026 tournament coming up on Saturday, September 5 — Labor Day Weekend!

We're currently at 20 teams, which means we have room for 12 more teams.

1 - Dan Dolan- Mourhite Louali
2 - Maggie Sweeney- Rick Sweeney - Natanna Wright
3 - Stephane Brico- Mica Gadhia -
4 - Logan Means- Stephan E Karlsson
5 - Fred Marchant- Johnnie Rosato
6 - Seth Kennedy- Mike Owens
7 - Shirley Jones- Linda Benton
8 - Chris Paccione- Doug Boes
9 - Songmi Keating- Jaemi Keating
10 - Mary Jo Wilson- Pat Ptaszynski
11 - Cherri Sutphin - Mark Woitkiewicz
12 - Keith Gise- Mike Livings
13 - Max Sewell- Edward Gildea
14 - Scott Seifer- Rom Sills - John Wilson
15 - Hank Mauldin- Renee Barrett
16 - Jim Clapper- James Clapper - Sebastian Paccione
17 - Juan Hernandez- Heidi Davison
18 - Al Davison- Monica Moczek
19 - Frank Bocce- Janet Torrico
20 - Scott Harleman- Averitt Hunt

And there are some pretty good reasons to grab a partner and sign up:
🏆 Cash prizes
🍨 Handmade ice cream bowls
🥇 Special tournament medals
🍦 Ice cream and toppings
🎯 A full day of pétanque, competition, music, and fun

The 1st and 2nd place Concours teams will receive cash prizes, handmade ice cream bowls, AND medals. Other winning places will receive medals.

And here's an extra incentive: if we reach 24 teams, we'll add a Concours B playoff bracket, which means even more medals and more chances for teams to finish the day as winners!

Teams can be 2 players or 3 players, so get your team together and sign up.

👉 Sign up your team on Zeffy and reserve your spot before we're full!

The online sign up is live at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/ice-cream-petanque-open-tournament--2026. You can play as a Doubles Team and also upgrade that Doubles Entry to a Triples Team by adding a player. Either way it works out to $10 per team mate. Lunch options are available too. Details of tournament on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1FMq9sYYr7/

Anyone who is available to volunteer for the day on Saturday Sept 5th, that is not playing in tournament, please grab me court side or reach out. I could use a few helpful hands during the day working the scoring table and assisting with set up, lunch, and tear down.
Also, help support our club's outreach efforts via MeetUp. Ice Cream Petanque Open Tournament 2026 T‑shirts and Gear available: https://camel-city-petanque-gear.printify.me/collection/ice-cream-petanque-open-tournament-2026-gear

Pétanque This Weekend + Sunday Game Night & Ice Cream Tournament Update for Winston-Salem

Hi everyone,

Ready to get outside, toss some boules, and enjoy some good company? We have two chances to play pétanque this weekend at Miller Park!

Friday at 5:00 PM — Come out for an evening of casual pétanque. Whether you've played for years or have never picked up a boule, you're welcome. We have plenty of extra boules, so all you need to bring is yourself and a willingness to have some fun.

Sunday at 1:00 PM — We'll be back on the courts for another afternoon of pétanque, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs. Come for a game, stay for the camaraderie, and meet some great people. Everyone is welcome, and beginners are always encouraged to join us!

🍽️ Sunday Evening: Food, Cards & Games at Mayberry Restaurant
After we finish playing Sunday afternoon, we're heading over to Mayberry Restaurant for dinner and games, beginning around 5:15 PM. We've reserved the meeting room at Mayberry's so we can eat, relax, and break out the cards and board games.

This is something we're trying out to see if we'd like to make it a monthly meal and game night for the pétanque community. And you do not have to play pétanque at Miller Park to join us Sunday evening! Come meet everyone, grab some food, play a game, or simply hang out. Everyone is welcome!

Mayberry's Restaurant is located at 50 Miller St A, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 https://share.google/4CpBcipQPZyHcqsBa

🍦 Ice Cream Pétanque 2026 — September 5

That's more teams getting a chance to play for something and even more fun throughout the day. Mike Livingston has been 3d Printing the "medals". They are looking good.

If you've been thinking about playing, now is the time to get your team together and sign up. Grab a partner, grab a teammate, and come be part of a tournament that's going to be a little different, a lot of fun, and topped off with ICE CREAM! Plus $160 for first place and $60 for second place in Concours along with custom made pottery ice cream bowls by Rodney for the top 3 finishing teams in Concours and of course plenty of medals for all the winners in both brackets.

🎯 Another Fantastic Weekend on the Pétanque Courts!

What a great weekend at the Miller Park Pétanque Courts! We kicked things off Friday evening with 12 players enjoying friendly competition, plenty of laughs, and a beautiful summer evening. Then on Sunday, our courts were buzzing again as we spent the afternoon playing until 5:00 PM. Whether it was a perfectly placed point, a clutch shot, or just catching up with good friends between games, it was another reminder that pétanque is about much more than throwing boules—it's about building friendships and making every weekend a little more memorable.

The fun didn't stop when the last boule was thrown. A group of us headed over to Texas Roadhouse for dinner, where the conversations, stories, and laughter continued. That's one of the best parts of our club—you don't just come to play a game, you become part of a welcoming community that's always happy to meet new people.

🌞 Have you been thinking about coming out? This weekend is the perfect time! You don't need any experience, you don't need your own equipment, and there's absolutely no cost to give it a try. We'll teach you everything you need to know in just a few minutes, and before long you'll be making great shots, sharing laughs, and wondering why you didn't discover pétanque sooner.

☀️ Another Fantastic Sunday on the Pétanque Courts! ☀️

What a picture-perfect day at the Miller Park Pétanque Courts! The sunshine was out, the courts were full of laughter, and it was wonderful to welcome players from Charlotte, Hickory, Greensboro, along with our own Camel City Pétanquers. Great competition, plenty of close games, and even more great conversations kept us playing until almost 5:00 PM. Days like this remind us that pétanque is about so much more than throwing boules—it's about spending time with good friends, making new ones, and enjoying every minute together. You just can't beat it!

The fun didn't end when the last boule was thrown. Thirteen of us headed to Applebee's for dinner to keep the good times rolling. The evening included a special birthday celebration for Gary, complete with the Applebee's staff singing "Happy Birthday" and Gary treating everyone to a round of $1 margaritas to celebrate! 🎉🍹 It was the perfect ending to an already amazing day filled with friendship, laughter, and memories that remind us why we look forward to every Sunday.

If you missed this one, don't miss the next! Join us every Sunday at 1:00 PM at the Miller Park Pétanque Courts in Winston-Salem. We welcome players of all skill levels, and if you've never played before, we'll teach you everything you need to know and provide the boules. Come see why so many people are discovering that Sunday afternoons are simply better with pétanque! 🇫🇷🎯
