Happy Juneteenth!!! ❤️🖤💚

Juneteenth is a time to remember the emancipation of already freed slaves in Galveston, TX as well as the cultural importance of perseverance in the face of injustice. Historically, Juneteenth served as a celebration of this emancipation as well as raised awareness around the Black political platform and the issues facing the Black community. The saying, “Stay Woke,” was a commonly used phrase in communities celebrating this holiday as well.
It can be difficult to see our histories erased by our own government but the core tenet of Juneteenth is the power of story-telling. Whether passing down stories in your own family or sharing your journey with others, Juneteenth can be a powerful bridge-building tool to help others understand some histories will not be told accurately unless we tell them ourselves.

We look forward to seeing these women gel together and show out on the field.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved teammate and family member, Zyana Flores-Thomas. Zee was not only a valued member of our rugby family but also a cherished friend, mentor, and inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

She first toured with ROOTS in December of 2022 at Freetail 7s. It was her first time playing rugby since leaving Brown U and she looked like she had been playing with the family for years. She had an infectious smile and bright personality. Most of all, she was always unapologetically herself.

Further details regarding funeral or memorial arrangements will be shared once available.

May Zee rest in peace and power.
