Meet Lindsay!

Lindsay is such a great example of listening to your body and giving it what it needs, even if it wasn’t fully in the plan for that day! Thank you Linds for always bringing great energy to the gym and showing up for YOU, whatever that looks like that day!

My fitness journey really started in high school when I began taking sports more seriously. That foundation eventually led me to play volleyball in college where my discipline and love for training grew even stronger! After college, my life did a complete 360, and I fell off from exercising almost entirely.

In the beginning, my goals were simple: I wanted to feel more confident in my own skin, and take care of my mental health. Over time those goals have grown into something much bigger! I’m building long term habits, pushing my limits, and proving to myself that I can be disciplined, consistent, and proud of the person I’m becoming. It’s evolved from trying to fix myself to learning how to truly show up for myself.

About 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Learning my limits, dealing with inflammation triggers, and accepting that some days look different has been frustrating (and honestly discouraging at times). But I’m lucky I’ve got an amazing coach who helps modify things when I need it. It’s taught me to listen to my body and give myself grace.

Honestly, my nutrition glow up have been a whole journey by itself. It’s taken me awhile to figure out what actually fuels me - especially with Crohns and what send my body into chaos. Once I started eating with intention, choosing foods my gut actually likes, and ditching things that trigger inflammation, everything changed. My overall health finally feels like it’s working with me instead of against me.

Listen to your body! Some days you’ll feel unstoppable, and others you’ll need modifications - and both are okay. Stay consistent and build a routine that supports YOUR health, not someone else’s highlight reel.

My lifestyle feels more intentional, my energy is better, and I actually look forward to moving my body. I trust myself more, I’m more confident, and I show up in every part of my life with way more strength - mentally and physically.

Favorite exercises: Deadlifts & cleans!

Least favorite: My least favorite “exercise” isn’t even a workout LOL. It’s a warm up. Rollercoasters. You can absolutely count on me doing about half of whatever # Katy tells us to do of those. And wall walks? Not been a friend of mine lately.

Meet Vanessa!

It has been such a pleasure watching Vanessa show up consistently, do the work and progress hugely in your fitness over the past year. It’s a surprise if we don’t see Vanessa at the gym, she makes no excuses and she is reaping all the benefits!

How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?

I’ve never been much of an athlete. In school and growing up I chose golf, trapshooting, and my dirt bike over team sports so I didn’t have to wear a required matching uniform (you will NEVER see me in spandex). I excelled in all my fitness testing when I was in the Air Force - but that’s not setting the bar very high. Outside of that I’ve always been employed in agriculture so I kept active, but put on plenty of weight and got out of shape as I got older.

What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?

Only one goal and I’ve kept it simple. Just keep showing up and completing the workout. Even when the workout has all the things I’m bad at, just go anyway, do what you can, and get it over with. After a while…your abilities grow and suddenly you become more capable in more workouts. I figure if I can stick to that the results will follow. So far I’m right. That one goal has evolved into some good habits - stretching for example.

What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?

Nothing original here. Motivation #1. Making the time. Spending the $$ on a gym membership. Injuries. Finding childcare so I can get a real workout in. Pick an excuse, I’ve used them all to justify why I shouldn’t go to the gym, get out for a walk/run, or take care of myself.

How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?

My nutrition has changed significantly, for the better. Both my workouts and overall health have improved. The workouts are challenging. And I’m taking time from my day specifically for them…so I’ve worked my day’s diet and weekly meal planning around that 1 hour a day workout to make the best of it.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?

Going to the gym alone is boring. Come to class and you’ll have more fun. Also, it’s a nice change of pace to have fitness programming so you don't have to plan a workout - life is too busy for that. You quite literally show up and just do what you are told, but without the awful gym class vibe or anyone yelling at you. Try it for a few weeks, you’ll understand and get hooked.

How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?

Centering my day around my workout and not trying to fit my workout into my day has made my time management and scheduling more efficient and productive. I thrive on routine and productivity, so this new mindset has made me far happier and more grounded.

What’s your favorite exercise? Least?

Favorite exercise – something with a barbell – preferably bench or push press. Deadlift or back squats too!

Least favorite exercise – anything that requires my body to touch the floor. The highest % of body contact to the ground = the most hated = Burpees. Booo.
