Champ Kart Racing 101: Well what is it? ⬇️
Sometimes when people hear of “Champ Karts” they believe of the old standard “gokarts”. These karts aren’t your standard gokart. Champ Karts are full-on race cars built with smaller chassis’s & are lightweight. Seats in these cars have to be a certain height, so that our center of gravity (COG) is almost perfect, so that it doesn’t upset the handling of the kart. (to detail below). These karts are designed for oval tracks. (Dirt & Pavement mostly). We draft (almost like NASCAR) and we can reach up to speeds of 40+ possibly 60 mph, (depends on track). These are purpose-built competition machines with speed, handling, & grip depending on track or track conditions & tires.
Some key features:
•Adjustable front end & rear setups for handling changes (depending on driver preference).
•Fiberglass Seats
•Lightweight Side panels on either side, & fiberglass nose panel for the front of the kart.
•Seat Placement: Very important for this type of racing. When we bolt our seats, we now have a third dimension & potentially changed the total flex of our chassis drastically.
•Tires: We use Yellow Vega Tires, that are basically slicks on pavement. Different rubber compounds can react differently under same track conditions.
•Stagger: Yes! You read that right. Again, it’s a race car. We do use stagger drastically. Depending on track, & banking of the track, etc. We mainly focus on rear stagger. Rear stagger is the difference between the two rear tires. (LR&RR). It is a very fundamental setup that everyone uses & knows in all types of oval track racing. Rear Stagger allows the rear axle of the kart to roll through a corner with given radius with no scrub or drag of the two rear tires.
•High Performance engines: usually 4-cycle or 2-cycle depending on class.
•Maintenance! Especially cleaning maintenance. Before & after every race you should make sure your kart is cleaned, especially bearings, axles, body panels, tires & rims, etc. especially if you’re racing on dirt. Dirt can get into basically anywhere on the race car. This is by far our favorite part of the job. Atleast. 😉
To note:
(This is only certain information, not all.) ⚠️
There are so many different key features of a Champ Kart. Champ Kart racing is a great starter stepping stone for someone looking into getting into racing. We run the Sr Champs, but chassis builders build Jr Champs, Jr Sportsmans, etc for those youngsters wanting to race. Kart racing teaches us drivers the real racing craft.
