For 7 years this belt sat on a shelf, in a spot where I would see it every day I woke up.
Six months ago I tied it around my body again. The blue felt white, familiar yet foreign. Every week I have been working towards regaining knowledge my body once knew, and confidence i once had. It’s been a slow and steady climb back to where I once left off. It’s not a quick and easy path. It’s not like riding a bike. It’s like training for a marathon after you have been on the couch for years. I’m not saying this to gather messages of congratulations, I’m saying this in hopes that it might catch the eye of someone who thinks it might be too late to restart. It’s not. Just got to walk through the door.“

“Last night I received my purple belt, and I’m still in a bit of shock this morning.

I feel so grateful for this journey and for every person who has been part of it. Thank you to my professors and teammates for pushing me, encouraging me, teaching me, and making me better every time I step on the mats. I’m eternally grateful for the community of amazing women I get to train with every week. They make me laugh, challenge me, and yes, leave me with plenty of bruises. When I first walked into the gym, I was nervous. Thankfully, I found teammates who made me feel welcome right away and who continue to make this place feel like home.

I hope this encourages another woman who is thinking about starting but feels nervous. Come try it! The women in this sport are so awesome, and getting to train alongside them is the best!”
