Fortaleza Ranch & Oscar Quijandria, Trainer

Fortaleza Ranch & Oscar Quijandria, Trainer Fortaleza Ranch, a beautiful property owned by Oscar & Carol Quijandria, is a training and boarding Contact us for more information.

Fortaleza Ranch is the base for Oscar Quijandria, trainer of Peruvian Pasos. Oscar began training in the 1970s as a young apprentice to Hugo Nieto Suarez, of Ica, Peru. There he learned the traditional, classical way of training these magnificent horses, with their smooth, four-beat gait and wonderful temperaments. He also was part of that breeding program which has produced dozens of champion hor

ses in Peru. Oscar came to the USA in 2000, and began working for ranches and breeders of Peruvians in New Mexico and California. Since then, he has trained numerous show horses, including many Champion of Champions, as well as horses for trail and recreation. In 2014, he branched out on his own, with his wife Carol, to found OCQ Peruvians, and to purchase the property that is now Fortaleza Ranch. Here is where you will find gentle, classical training of the Peruvian horse, in a way that emphasizes perfect control while experiencing the immense pleasure of riding a horse with "brio" - the energy that propels Peruvians to be one of the most enjoyable, and, dare we say, least boring rides! At Fortaleza Ranch, we offer the classical Peruvian training with calm and gentleness. Horses trained here are soft in the mouth, responsive, and fine tuned to show off their wonderful gait. Oscar is also pleased to take on any problem horse that perhaps has gotten off to a rocky start. We also offer tune-ups and complete training, from halter to being finished in the bit. We offer reasonable boarding with the best personalized care for all breeds, as well as training and boarding packages. Boarding for all horses are in 24 x 24 ft corrals, with shelters, auto waters, and quality hay. Amenities include round pen, arena area, tack room, restroom, fridge, and trails are accessible right off the property. If you've never ridden a Peruvian, we would be honored to show you what you've been missing. If you own a Peruvian, you owe it to yourself to have quality training.

This mare is DJG Miraflores, an 8 year old Peruvian. She was diagnosed 14 months ago with a torn tendon. We were heartbroken as we think she's a special mare but with COVID 19, and a lot of cancelled shows in 2020-2022, she didn't get the proper exposure or experience that we would have liked for her in the show ring. We had her ultrasound checked, had the recommended therapeutic injections (Pro-stride) and followed the rehab protocols to the letter between August 2022 and early August 2023. Was it easy? Heck no -- it rained constantly between December and March and, being in California, we don't have a covered arena or round pen for the hand walking, more walking and finally riding every day. We were originally told this mare might not show again. Maybe only would be lightly ridden. There were no guarantees certainly, and we understood that. As a horse owner, I would do this for any of my horses, but this mare has always been dear to us for so many reasons.

This summer we had her checked again at the one year mark -- and were told that she is 100% sound, rideable and showable. So she was carefully conditioned and carefully shown this past weekend at the SoCal Peruvian Paso Horse Club show in Temecula. (I, Carol Q, had been the one to walk and ride her -- Oscar rode her twice this year before getting into the ring this past Saturday and didn't mind me sharing that!). She took first in Breeding Mares 7 yrs+ and Breeding Mares Reserve Champion.

We just wanted all our friends to know how much this past weekend meant to us. We are over the moon. :)

Thank you to Michele Wilson, who co-owns Miraflores with us, for being on this journey either us and so supportive as well as being here this weekend in person to watch her. I cried. Joy Gould (Miraflores' breeder), it was a pleasure to watch the class with you. We also highly recommend SoCal Equine in Norco and Katie Weatherall DVM there.
