This is what the summer looked like. Sunday is the last one.

Nine Sundays since late June, and a great turnout every week. Kids with zero experience right next to high school varsity letter winners, everyone getting better together.

Wi******er Recreation open mats, 10 to 12 at the Rec Center. Grades 3 to 12, all levels, no experience needed. Walk-ins welcome. $10 drop-in, $15 non-residents.

Last one. Wi******er Recreation open wrestling mats close out the summer this Sunday, August 30.

Nine Sundays since late June, and we had a great turnout every week. Kids with zero experience showed up alongside high school varsity letter winners, friends who tagged along, and curious kids trying wrestling for the very first time.

That mix is what open mat is all about. Everyone gets to learn, get some work in, and help each other get better. Great vibes, good workouts, and a lot of new faces on the mat this summer.

Thank you to the entire Wi******er Recreation staff, including Michelle Blumsack and Chris Ellison, for running these all summer, and to every family who made the drive on a summer Sunday morning.

Special thanks to Coach Mark Pulli, High School Head Coach Ryan Errico and Coach Tomi Uyehara for instructing the kids and growing the sport in Wi******er.

If you have been meaning to come try it, this is the last one of the summer.

We are back on the mat. Wi******er Recreation open wrestling mats run this Sunday, August 23, at the Recreation Center, after last week's closure for scheduled facility work.

The summer season has been a good one, and these last two weeks are the easiest time of year to try wrestling for the first time. No experience needed, nothing to sign up for beyond the drop-in, and the room is used to new faces.

Sunday, August 23, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Wi******er Recreation Center. Open to all students grades 3 to 12, all levels. Walk-ins welcome, so bring a friend.

Just a few months ago, Kai Napadow Baquero was finishing his senior season at Wi******er. Now he has moved into college, met his new teammates, and is settling into life as a Division I student-athlete with Cornell Wrestling.

Kai started wrestling as a freshman at Wi******er. Over the next four years he became a team captain, All-State finalist, New England qualifier, NHSCA All-American and Academic All-American, and finished his WHS career with 122 wins.

There will be a lot to adjust to. A new school, new teammates, college academics, and an entirely different level of wrestling.

We are proud to see a Wi******er wrestler walking into the world class Cornell wrestling room, and even more excited to see where the next four years take him.

Four years ago Kai was a freshman who had never wrestled. That is what this program is for.

NO OPEN MAT THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 16.

The gym is closed for scheduled facility work, so the mats stay rolled up this week.

Consider it a rest day you did not have to ask for. Sleep in, eat a real breakfast, and let the shoulders recover.

Camp week. Eleven WHS wrestlers, three days at the Springfield Wrestling School, four wrestling sessions, dorms, and a tournament Friday morning.

They came home tired. They came home better.

offseason

Eleven WHS wrestlers spent Wednesday through Friday at the Springfield Wrestling School at Springfield College.

Four wrestling sessions, strength and conditioning, two sport psychology sessions, team building challenges between blocks, and an individual tournament Friday morning. Two nights in the dorms and meals in the dining hall. They worked hard, and they had a good time doing it.

Head Coach Ryan Errico has a long history with the program at Springfield, and camp has become one of the ways our wrestlers keep building through the offseason.

They came home tired. They came home better. And they came home knowing ten other guys a lot better than they did on Wednesday, which is most of what a season is built on.
