The final and most elite tournament in our region is now in the books. The New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships brings together champs and top placers from 6 NE states (MA, ME, NH, VT, RI, and CT), and is the final stop on the post-season grind that starts at Sectionals, then Divisional States, then All-States, and now New Englands. Wi******er had 2 qualifiers who represented Massachusetts at New Englands, captains Kai Napadow Baquero at 120lbs and Eddie Donlon at 138lbs. Both fought hard and came through with two victories a piece at New Englands, going 2-2. Kai upset the New Hampshire state champion to make the Quarterfinals, staying alive to day 2 of the tournament. Eddie came away with a pin and a tech fall victory, which at this level further solidifies his grit and perseverance. Both captains saw their WHS High School careers end at this tournament. Kai finished 41-7 on the year, and 122-44 over his 4-year career. Eddie finished 45-11 on the year and 138-51 for his career. Both kids exemplified leadership and steady growth for our wrestling program. They set the benchmark for our team in the future, passing the torch to the next generation. We'll be following these two in college next year - congratulations for a season to remember.

We placed 2 at All-States in Springfield this weekend, and both Kai and Eddie have qualified for the prestigious New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships in Providence next weekend! All-States has the top 5 placers from D1, D2, and D3 all competing in one tournament. On the way to the final, Kai beat the 120lb D2 and D3 state champions in the Quarters and Semis, and is the first WHS wrestler since 2004 to be an All-States finalist. Eddie placed at All-States for his first time, beating some tough opponents, and will see his season continue for one more tournament - a huge accomplishment on the season. Ilyas Malik unfortunately saw his season end, but stayed to cheer on the team and will hopefully be back and continue to battle next year in college. Great job captains! We're all proud of your accomplishments in your Senior year!

We battled for two days at the D1 Divisional State tournament, and came out in the top 10 out of more than 50 teams from across the State - a huge accomplishment. Multiple wrestlers contributed to our point total, led by Senior captains Kai Napadow Baquero, who finished 3rd at 120lbs, and Eddie Donlon, who also finished 3rd at 138lbs. Senior captain Ilyas Malik finished 5th at 175lbs, and Shaun Garrett finished in 8th place. All 3 team captains punched their ticket to the All-States tournament next weekend in Springfield, and will try and keep their season going. We'll be battling til the end! D1 Central / Metro Sectionals are in the books, and Wi******er Wrestling fought hard and placed 2nd as a team in a 14-deep field. We had a very competitive group of Seniors this year, and most everyone contributed points to our total. Ultimately, we placed 8 at Sectionals, with 7 auto-qualifying for D1 States. We had 4 finalists and of those, 3 champions - a huge accomplishment for the program. Big week of practice coming up, as we stay focused on States.

Good luck to all competitors today at MIAA Sectionals... the Post-Season is upon us! Thanks to Wi******er News for the coverage.

Throughout the past month, it seemed like everybody in New England caught Super Bowl fever after watching their Patriots win three straight playoff games to get to the big game in Santa Clara, Calif. last Sunday, Feb. 8. The results notwithstanding, it’s time to get back to work, and

Wi******er beat Lexington wrestling last night 60-12 on Senior night. We celebrated 15 seniors who have all been grinding for 4 years now, through many ups and downs. It was a moment to also thank the wrestling moms and dads, who came out to support the team on our last home dual meet of the season. Thanks to everyone for making it a special night and coach Ryan Errico for serving as the master of ceremonies. Last week of meets coming up and then onto the Post-Season!

Congratulations to Captain Kai Napadow Baquero for securing his 100th career win last night versus Lexington. Your steady progression from Freshman to Senior year (8-9; 26-18; 47-10; 19-3 and counting...) has been a model for other kids just starting wrestling in High School. Wi******er wrestling finished 5-0 on the day, winning the Warrior Duals tournament at Brookline High School. It was great experience for the whole team, since most varsity starters picked up 5 matches, and individually we had 5 wrestlers go 5-0 over the course of the tournament - Senior Captains Kai Napadow Baquero (120lbs), Eddie Donlon (138lbs), and Ilyas Malik (175lbs, picked as Outstanding Wrestler), as well as Sophomore Leo Gannon (132lbs) and veteran Senior Jack Allen (144lbs). Way to go! Picking up steam as we barrel forward toward the post-season.

Wi******er wrestling had a great tournament yesterday at Belmont High School. Thank you to Belmont Wrestling for hosting 23 teams and organizing both a varsity and JV tournament. We came in 3rd place overall, with standout performances by several wrestlers. We had 2 finalists - Ilyas Malik who won the tournament at 175lbs and Kai Napadow Baquero who came in second at 120lbs. We had 2 in the consolation final - Eddie Donlon who came in 3rd at 138lbs and Luca Kovacev who came in 4th at 165lbs. We also had Leo Gannon contribute 3 wins at 132lbs and Ian Welsh and Jack Allen contribute 2 wins a piece. Invaluable experience for the whole team to compete in the Brendan Grant tournament, hope to be back next year and win it all!
